Change is in the air

Who are you? Where are you going? And how are you going to get there? These three questions are repeatedly asked through my high school experience. By senior year, one should know the responses, For me, I knew long before I entered high school. However, the answers to these questions were different during my freshman year. Everything changed when my first camera became my eye to see the world. Photography has been a significant piece of my life. From planning photoshoots regularly, attending summer of art pre-college program, photographing senior photos, attending high school photography classes, to traveling for private photography lessons, it has always been there as my central reality. For example, the UAL website writes, “Each College has strong links with industry, enabling many students to work on live projects and gain professional contacts. We can provide the high-quality teaching, modern facilities and creative space for you to explore your ideas, skills and unique vision.” However, to me it is much more. I desire to partake in an engaging new culture, aspire to work with people all around the world, comprehend different points of view to assimilate them with my own, care to meet people in the world that obtain the same interest as me. As Socrates, once said, “The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.” That is precisely I wish to do, build a new life for myself, where I can experience changes in all aspects: a new life containing new friends, a new school, a new country. While looking through stacks of pictures I realize how important the memories in the photos are to me. One particular photo, from ninth grade, is especially significant to me not because of how I or my friends look, but because of how much my life has changed in the few years since I began high school. Walking through the doors of Bartram trail High School my first day freshman year was the start of who I was and who I would become. Today and I am a bigger and better person than I was the first day of high school as I have become the person I wish to be and I have high school to thank for that, but more importantly I have Link Crew to thank. Link Crew is a part of the Project Boomerang program created for freshmen, designed to help freshmen adjust from middle school to high school with assistance from upperclassmen who are able to share insight about their high school experiences.…

The sound of all kinds of complicated equipments tingling by my ear, the smell of medical alcohol flowing in the air, I lay on the dental bed in my orthodontist Dr.Ke’s clinic. A thin layer of sweat covers his forehead, but his hands are steady and gentle. Though his thick glasses, I look into his eyes. Deep down, I see concentration, persistence, and 100% care for his patient, and that is when the idea of being an orthodontist emerged in my mind. I want to bring beauty to people; I want to show my care to my patients as if they are my family; what’s more, I want to serve the others with my knowledge and ability.…

According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, diversity is the condition of having or being of different elements. Many times the word diversity is used in terms of people and cultures. This is the case because no two people are alike, and this holds true for cultures as well. Diversity of an individual encompasses three different areas: invariability, variability, and influence. While invariable characteristics of a person tend to remain the same over one’s lifetime, variable characteristics and environmental influences vary throughout a lifetime.…

My passion for art has followed me since I was five years old, when I was inspired by my kindergarten art teacher, who told us we could paint grapes whatever color we wanted. Being given that freedom made me feel ecstatic. That freedom I was able to have with art gave me a sense of purpose, even at a young age. However, when I moved to a different elementary school, the art teacher stripped us of that freedom. She was very cold and made people dread going to art class, including me.…

The Big Day As I sat there waiting for my results, surrounded by friends but feeling so alone, I pondered at all the possibilities "maybe I qualified for state or maybe I didn't" I kept thinking. I could hear the blasting of horns and the beating of drums in the distance, strangely though I was surrounded by sound and vibrations I still managed to tune it out. For some reason to me sitting in that one seat became almost my own little bubble filled with self doubt while at the same time a shred of hope. It felt like chaos and anarchy reigned in my head, hope battling doubt, until I saw a judge post results on to a wall; my bubble popped, and slowly I approached the results. Going into my junior year of high school I had only one goal; to become the best Euphonium player and prove all the people who ever doubted me wrong.…

The paradoxical role of photography in contemporary life is explored by Teju Cole in his essay “Memories of Things Unseen.” When a photograph is the last trace we have of a destroyed work of art, it becomes something more, or so it seems. Photography in its purest form is simply a method of storytelling without the need for words. Many factors go into taking a photo. You don't simply take a photo using just your eyes, but rather with your emotions, experience, and heart.…

Everyone has a special talent or ability, my talent is drawing. I wasn’t born an artist or particularly skilled at all, but I knew from a young age that talents are what set us apart from others and make us unique. Photographs are used to convey messages without having to say a single word. That is how strong a single photograph can be. Photography is a beautiful skill that can document events, natural scenery, and can be used for artistic projects. First, one of the many reasons about the importance of photography is the fact that it slows down the rapid pace of life. Every day there is something worth remembering whether it be an event that occurred or a first time meeting a valuable friend.…
