College Admissions Essay: The Role Of Passion In Theatre

Improved Essays
When I was younger, people constantly told me to follow my passion. They would always say that if you did, it would help guide you towards your dreams and ambition in life. At that time, I didn’t know what passion meant and how passion played a role in anyone’s life, not until the beginning of seventh grade I finally began to understand why passion was so unique and different for everyone and figured out the meaning of passion through my passion for acting. I never really discovered it until I decided to take theater as one of my electives that year (seventh grade), instead of woodshop class. The only reasons why I decided to take it that year was because I had curiosity behind what it felt like to become a performer. I also picked it because,

People are born with passion within them but also with a journey ahead of them to find what or where it is intended. Finding that passion comes in the brief or extensive discovery of something that resonates with themselves and their hearts. Passion is built from a simple introduction that quickly grows into more. For Darian Zachek, her passion for golf sparked from her father's attempt at an effort for bonding. At the age of seven years old, Zachek's father would take her out to the driving range as a way of bonding with his daughter, and it was from there that she continued to pursue the game.…

When people think of professional actors, they tend to think of romantic leading types. But I wouldn’t trade being a character actor for anything. I studied acting at Carnegie Mellon, and as graduation approached, I noticed that those of us who fell into the ‘character actor’ category were getting different words of wisdom than those who tended to play lead roles. For the leads, there was a lot of pressure to sign with a big agent and start working right away, because it’s all about youth and beauty. But it was almost the opposite for me.…

Theater offers the audience a glimpse into the lives of the people portrayed. Smith does a dramatic interpretation of the different people she has interviewed. By acting out the interviews rather than quoting them in a article or taking a video and risk compromising anonymity, she is able to connect with the audience better. Smith also uses a technique that implements video alongside spoken performance to get her point across. In this case, it is very successful because the snippets of video used build on the narrative of the people being interviewed.…

Growing up in an artistic household, there had never been a time that dance was not present in my life. At an early age, I was exposed to the arts and show business and nothing intrigued me more. I would spend countless hours backstage of my mother’s performances, frolicking in her makeup and playing make-believe. I fell in love with everything the theater had to offer and eventually it became my second home. As I grew older, and my motor skills emerged, nothing and no one could restrain me from dancing to the imaginary rhythms that flowed through my body.…

Originally, there were various ideals I had for myself in the future, ranging from theatrical involvement to something as simplistic as being a therapist. By the middle of my sophomore year, my dreams to be an actress, although superficial, were now something of a hobby instead of a focus. And what would be the reasoning to that? My change in focus is simply due to being told I need to be more realistic with life, to always have a fall-back plan. I understood that theatre is irrational to pursue when it is difficult to get into shows, living on almost nothing in between the many auditions one would attend.…

Ever since I can remember I have been preoccupied with music. As a child I remember obsessing over my dad's CD collection and spending lengthy afternoons just listening to them with him. My home was never silent there was always music playing in the living room, the sounds of drums being banged on or guitar amps booming from the basement. If you ask my mother she might tell you this was bothersome but if you ask me it was perfect.…

It is often said that teenagers begin discovering themselves in high school, but I did the opposite- I lost myself. The source of my pleasure and delight shifted from books to parties, writing to boys, and video-games to my social life. Something within me desperately craved to be normal- to no longer be the girl that gets harassed and ostracized for being an “appalling nerd” and because of this, vital aspects of my personality began to change and I morphed into an entirely different person. Through this journey, I learned that my self-hate was a catalyst for self-love and appreciation. Having always been considered an unusual girl in the eyes of my peers, I'd never been truly comfortable in my skin.…

The heat from the stage lights, the watchful gazes of the audience, and the sweat dripping off of our faces as we struggle to remember our lines, these sensations of being on stage are what caused the performing arts to become not only an activity, but also a passion and an unexpected source of personal growth. Through my experiences in drama and music I have been able to discover my own meaning of fulfillment and define who the person behind my appearance truly is. My passion in the performing arts started when I was a young child first learning to play the violin. Picking up the violin at the age of 6, I became stuck on one of the most basic songs for almost a whole year. At that time no one believed that I could play the violin, my teacher thought that I was too hyperactive and even my mom attempted to convince me to quit.…

Two things share my passion in life: mental health and musical theatre. Mental health advocation is very important to me because I know many people who have been impacted by mental illness. This covers a spectrum from adhd to ocd, from self harm to eating disorders, from stress to bipolar disorder. I believe it is important that people who struggle with issues seek help and are not stigmatized for it. This passion runs so deeply that I chose my independent study course to focus on mental health and illness in adolescents.…

Passion is the key to happiness. However, in a society where many are taught to follow the safe route, it is very easy to lose sight and end up in a place devoid of excitement. The belief that “passion can’t pay the bills” is enough to keep people from pursuing real dreams and interests. One of my earliest dreams was to become an astronomer; a dream that was a huge part of my childhood. I wanted to explore the skies, land on the moon and unravel the mysteries of the universe.…

Passion One significant goal that many individuals have in life is finding their passion. As a clown may inspire a child, he may want to be a juggler for children party. While many parents will shudder about the thoughts of having their children be the fear factor for many individuals, passion focuses on this very concept. Simon Sinek based his view on passion differently than how others will view it. In this video, he found passion not as an action, but “a form of activity that you can do for free and cannot believe that you get paid for said activity” (Sinek).…
