College Admissions Essay: The Pink Lady

Improved Essays
I believe we should not let our circumstances define us and hold us down, but rather help drive us to make a greater future for ourselves and those around us. When I was a baby I was adopted by my grandparents. Due to the fact that my mother was schizophrenic, she was unable to care for me and my siblings. Although my upbringing was not traditional, I believe it not only gave me a strong sense of individuality and pride in education, but a very unique outlook on life in general.
Education has been a very important part of my life from a very young age. My grandfather, who was a retired teacher, never stopped believing I could do whatever I set my heart on. He had a constant faith in people and knew that no matter what life had thrown at you,

Two years ago I created a life sized sculpture for a breast cancer awareness auction at my school. The sculpture was of a woman painted in various shades of pink. I spent approximately twenty three hours throughout the week constructing “The Pink Lady”. I molded a friend with tape and piece by piece built my sculpture. When she was finished she ended up being the highest grossing object sold at the auction, all of the profit being donated to breast cancer charities. The woman who bought The Pink Lady gave her back to me, so I donated her to a cancer facility where she is still on display to this day. Knowing that my art made such an impact on my community was really the best response I could have received. I am also the assistant to the multimedia teacher in my high school. Creating many posters, banners, shirts, and flyers for a variety of programs involved with our school system. This has helped me become responsible for deadlines, and broadened my artistic …show more content…
The harder classes have provided me with many challenges, and driven me to work harder and become as accomplished academically as possible. Many class officers, myself included, have volunteered for countless community activities. Some of which include feeding the homeless on Thanksgiving, canned food drives, and being a pen-pal to one of the children that attends our local Boys and Girls Club. My personal favorite volunteer activity I am involved with is with our local foster children program, called DHS. Around Halloween and Christmas we put together decorations, and fun activities for the children. Some of which include face painting, craft building, coloring, hayrides, a gift from Santa, and a meal. Being that I am adopted, helping these children really touched my heart. I am extremely motivated to make a difference wherever I possibly can. By stepping out of my comfort zone and simply helping a child have a good holiday memory I managed to unintentionally solidify in myself a lifelong need for caregiving and

For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

I am helping out at the Jacob Hiatt Magnet School in a 4th grade class. Every week for 2 hours I am able to help students with their classroom activities. At the beginning, I use to just go around in class and help the students when they need help. Now, the teacher has me take the one or two students who are struggling and sit outside with them to help them catch up. This helps them to be able to be on the same page as everyone else and it makes it easier for the teacher as well because it gets really hard for one teacher to be able to keep everyone at the same page and finish the course material on time.…

In the past few years, I’ve volunteered with a variety of organizations from National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, and Key Club. I have also co-founded a Community Outreach Club at high school. Through the Church I’ve assisted with Vacation Bible School and middle school retreats. One of my favorite memories came from volunteering for the first time with National Spanish Honor Society. Choosing to participate in this program was not a difficult decision, since I knew I wanted to continue practicing my Spanish and volunteer in the community at the same time.…

I was able to volunteer at a local bank that was sponsoring the Lake Park Elementary School for the holiday season. The school has over 300 underprivileged students between the ages of kindergarten and fifth grade. Most of the students at that school only have one meal per day. Along with other volunteers, I packaged bags that contained candy, toys, toiletries, a blanket, and a pair of athletic shoes. The bags were able to provide the children with goods that we often take for granted.…

After reading what Bouie wrote, I did noticed that he quoted many different people who have knowledge and opinions on talking white and the academic stigma on African-Americans. I was honesty amaze on what each person had to say as I can relate to struggles of being African-American who talks ‘proper’ and has been academically stereotyped by my peers and teachers. Growing up in an African-American family who has high expectations for you was I guess you would say a challenge, though it is different for every family. Education is a big thing in my family mainly because most of my family member didn’t either go to college or didn’t even finished until later in life.…

I was raised in a loving Christian family that has contributed to my personal values of acceptance, caring, and understanding. My parents continue to be great role models in my life and show me what it means to be a servant leader to the community. My father has been a high school football coach my whole life. As a child in south Florida, I watched my father extend his hand to many young Haitian refugees fleeing an oppressive government. Some of the Haitian boys joined the football team and became a part of a family that was missing as a result of their travels and situation.…
