Throughout my life, many different things have shaped the person I am today. In today’s society, I witness most young teenagers letting society shape them into the person they are going to be. Growing up has taught me to fall back on things that will never stop supporting me and pushing me to be a better person.

My family and my girlfriend are always there to fall back on. Growing up, I had a hard time dealing with acceptance as well as finding out who I actually am. My older sister Lindsey, who is almost 900 miles away in Colorado was the one who was always there for me. Guiding me through my teenage years, letting me know it was going to be okay and I’m not the only one. Sometimes I’ll come home stressed out from school or work, maybe it’s because I have too much homework or maybe I’m sick of my coworkers’ attitudes, my girlfriend is always there to love and comfort me. As are my mom and dad. It feels so good to have such a strong support system like my family and my girlfriend.

Kindness has become a foreign language, one I make an effort to practice everyday. I work in a coffee shop, which requires a tremendous about of patience, as well as hospitality and customer service. It was March of 1998; a bitter, cold morning she spent lying in a hospital bed caressing me in her arms. From that moment on, my mother has and always will be my ample motivation. It’s not just an emotional attachment that is brought on naturally by the forces of motherhood, but it is a psychological binding between the two of us that is nearly impossible to explain. The emotional impact of someone knowing more about you than you know about yourself is virtually magical. She has taught me more about my inner-self and the mysteries of the world more than anyone else I have ever met.…

For as long as I can remember, every teacher I have ever had made us share with the class what we wanted to be when we grew up. As a group, we would sit in a large circle and take turns sharing how we wanted to spend our adult lives. Some would be squirming in their chair, anxiously awaiting their turn to blurt out their lifetime goal. I, however, would be intensely listening to everyone else 's answers. Eventually, I would hear one that I could piggyback on and agree for the moment that I might want to do that too.…

My knees were weak and my eyes were so blurred that I couldn’t read the basic information that was on the plane ticket. The only thing I could have recognized was the color of it, which appeared to be a faded green in my eyes. For a short moment my mind was completely blank, then suddenly the thoughts and memories of the time being spent in Canaan, Tobago came rushing into me like ferocious waves of a traumatized ocean.…
