Louis Zoo because of my love for animals. While initially disappointed that most volunteer work focused on sustainability education, I quickly discovered incredible initiatives that pushed my limits. Covered head to toe in plastic bags, I welcomed visitors to the zoo while portraying an evil filthy “bag monster.” This environmental villain lurked deep in the ocean harming marine life encouraging families and children to assess whether their plastic bag usage was helping the “bag monster” destroy the environment. Consequently, I joined a research team at St. Louis University studying climate change on turtles. While most days were spent in the lab, my passion ignited in the backwoods of central Illinois. With the pungent stench of sardines lingering in my hair and water seeping through my waiters, I maneuvered through pond scum in galoshes planting turtle traps and collecting water samples. This experience, while stinky and strange, produced fascinating results supporting climate change effects on the physiology of turtles.
