Every time we walk into a store, everyone stops and stares. I walk hand in hand with my 7 year old autistic cousin. No one expects such loud noises to come from such a small ordinary little boy. Throughout my life I have dealt with the stares and the constant whispers behind my back. For me, this was a constant struggle for me to deal with. Until the day my eyes were opened up by my little cousin who means the world to me. He said “why let them be mean to you when they know nothing about us”. At first I was stunned. How could such a wise statement come from a 7 year old boy, who society has labeled as not smart enough. But the truth was that they didn't, they knew absolutely nothing about me or any of my family. So who were they to judge me? From that moment on I knew …show more content…
Not just the mentally disabled, but the elderly and infants and all that ranges in between. I’ve become obsessed with helping people. I would see people on the side of the streets and beg my mom to stop and let me go buy them lunch or dinner or anything else. I would see an elderly woman struggling to load her groceries into her car and rush over to help her. My passion of helping people begun to take over …show more content…
Florida State is not only ranked highly as a school in Florida, but also as a pre-med program. Tallahassee is filled with volunteer facilities where I could experience things hand on, and really receive what it takes and means to be successful in the medical field. And just as much as I'm taking in I would be giving out. While volunteering to further my education, I am also furthering the community as well. Each time I help a patient, I'm not just helping them. I'm helping their families, the community, and myself. My love for helping others, stems from my autistic cousin, but it would be able to go beyond that in the medical

An unusually fragile underclassman: devoid of faith and fearful of a new environment brimming with the cold embrace of the unknown. “What do you like about yourself?” Sitting in the audience, listening to an assembly during my freshman orientation of high school, this existential question hit me like a tidal wave—initially destructive yet ultimately metamorphic. Those around me blessed with a wealth of confidence from a young age beamed with vanity: athletes, scholars, musicians and those exceptionally precocious few with the ability to thrive in multiple environments.…

“No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted” —Aesop In a world full of hate and war, most people forget that a small act of random kindness can change even the saddest of hearts. Kindness has become a foreign language, one I make an effort to practice everyday. I work in a coffee shop, which requires a tremendous about of patience, as well as hospitality and customer service. Everyday, I make it apparent to myself that you never know what is going through an individual's mind, or the day they have had.…

A few months ago, I had a very candid conversation with my dad. He sat me down and we talked about my future, my plans for college and beyond and how he can help me achieve those goals. My plan for the time being was to get my generals done here at LSC and hopefully by then know what I want to do for a career so I can choose a college and a degree that suites me. After that my father expected a very familiar tale. The one where you get a job you love, a family you love more, to retire early and travel often.…

As I look at my life path, including my career life and education, it has always been filled with diversity and changes, but the one thing that I always held at the center of my choices was my desire to find that spark within learners (of all ages) that when lit would help them to realize and achieve their full potential. At this point in my educational path, I would like to achieve certification to work in an area that I have been drawn to since I was in high school. I feel that my past experiences, my education to this point and my love for education will benefit those whose lives I am able to touch by pursuing teacher certification. My experience working with children of differing abilities actually began when I was still in high school and the school district offered me employement/job shadowing in what was then called the SMI room or severely mentally impaired room. This was in…

Passions in Paradise College, the word that continues to terrify students for generations. According the Nelson Mandela, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Unfortunately, the value for a good education has taken a toll on many students across the state. They are often forced to change their passion due to their low income and high university prices. Although most result to community colleges, they are unable to receive job offers due to their competition.…

My passion for politics started when I was 12 years old, after I started noticing things on television concerning Scottish Independence. I saw the independence referendum as a chance for me to speak out about how I wanted my future to be, regardless of whether I would get to vote or not (which obviously, I wouldn’t). What I did not know though, is that just researching about Scottish and British Politics would cause me to branch out to other countries politics and become more aware social and economic problems my country and I would be facing in the future.…

I feel that I can make a difference in each patient’s life that I encounter, it might be as small as getting a wheelchair if they seem flaccid or weak, a blanket if they are cold, something to drink or just talking to a patient to get their mind off pre-surgery. I look forward to volunteering each week. The most rewarding day by far was being able to witness a nurse giving CPR to a child choking. She saved his life. I would want to someday be able to be able to save a life, not for the recognition but because I want to make a difference.…

The Gift of Teaching Think back to the year 2000. Our president was Bill Clinton,Y2K never happened, people were watching the first season of Survivor, and the biggest economic question was how the government was going to spend its $230 billion dollar surplus. Oh, and gas cost about $1.30/gallon. Terrorist attacks were problems for the rest of the world, we were certainly impervious to such threats in America. And in this year… the year before everything changed, I started teaching at Masuk High School.…
