I had a knack for making clothes and people noticed my talents. In fact, I became so well versed that I was sent to the capital city to work for the King. I was lucky enough to live in the royal dwelling and spend time serving the royal family. I became very close with the prince. We became very good friends during my time there. Each day after I finished my work, we would go into the jungle with our swords and pretend we were knights. We never sparred with each other though, as I was a much stronger fighter and did not want to find out what would happen if the prince came back with a flesh wound. While I was the best friend of the prince, I was still an enemy and a slave to the Kingdom of Fiji and the king treated me as such. My days still consisted of hours and hours of labor, molding leather in headdresses and tribal outfits. As a servant to the king, I would travel wherever the royal family traveled. One trip in particular changed my life

Upon my arrival, I noticed numerous patrol units on the scene as well as police security tapes surrounding the address mentioned above. Subsequently, I came into contact with the Patrol Officer that was in charge, Sergeant Tupac Shakur then briefed me on the situation at hand. Going to Haiti last summer was something I didn’t really expect. The summer prior, I had worked at Tall Timbers, a summer camp, and fell in love; it was the best summer of my life. After working there, I was dead set on working there for every summer as long as I could. But even shortly after moving out and going home at the end of that summer, I remember lying in bed one night and having the thought, what if I had to give this up? Courage can be difficult for anyone to overcome. Without fear, bravery is impossible, because it is only fear itself that can allow for one to be courageous. Often, one will be too overwhelmed by the feeling of fear to even consider doing what is brave or noble, or in most cases, what is right. Thus, showing true valor is a difficult feat that few people can accomplish. In turn, the payoff can be great.…

The morning of Saturday November 1st, 2014, I woke up to three hundred text messages and twitter notifications all notifying me that my friend, Dominik Pettey, was killed in a car crash by a drunk driver the previous night. No pain had ever felt so significant, it was crippling, but then instead of pain, I was numbed by the inability to grasp that my friend someone who I just had seen the night before, was gone. I ran the words “Dom is dead” through my head on a loop but could not bring myself to accept it. That week, although I was still here, facing such a tragedy, everything on earth seemed so insignificant, going to class, homework, midterms, everything. I woke up every morning wishing it was just in a bad dream and that noise would never cease because that is when it hit me the most, silence, when I didn't hear Dom’s infectious laugh or when he wasn't telling me that, “I am Kiera Wainer and deserve the best God can give”, which he used to say anytime I was upset, the first time he said those words was the second worst day of my entire life, it was the day my dad left for his new family.…
