The Love of My Life

My growing mind sparked with an interest in music when I was six years old, just from listening to music on the radio. Fascinated, I discovered the greatness of the music world and learned to feel the music and greatly enjoy it. My journey into learning to play guitar started with private lessons at age nine and has continued every week with the same instructor. The past nine years of my life have been dedicated to learning as much as possible about playing guitar from this amazing and humble instructor who is a master at his craft. I am so grateful to him for teaching me more than I ever could have imagined and instilling a passion in me for mastering my guitar playing for the rest of my life.

Excited about this new love of mine, playing the guitar, I joined the jazz and concert bands in middle school so I could enjoy playing guitar at school as well. Furthermore, in high school, I continue playing in the jazz band and also play in the pep band, exceptional experiences I will always remember that helped make me into the musician I am. Moreover, I have also been in three rock bands outside of school, a great learning experience of building something from scratch and making it work with lots of planning and practicing. Wanting to continue learning and mastering my guitar all year, I also attended summer rock guitar camps at the Maine Academy of Modern Music in Portland and Augusta for many years. Last summer I volunteered as a junior camp counselor at their Augusta rock guitar camp at UMA and loved every minute

In middle school and high school, I continued to be in the concert chorus and also joined the extracurricular choirs, the Master Singers and Messo Fortes at Messalonskee High School, wishing I had joined much sooner because of how much I enjoy

Walking on to the Lucas Oil turf as a Carmel Marching Greyhound for awards at Grand National finals after an exhilarating performance of “What a Tangled Web We Weave” was a feeling of pure accomplishment. As a sophomore, I had done this once before, but this time was different. The whole band knew we were in the running for the national title. Avon and Broken Arrow were our biggest competitors. Earlier in the season we won ISSMA state, so coming into nationals we knew we had a pretty good chance of being exceptionally good.…

In eighth grade, I decided to audition for GMEA District Honor Band. The audition itself was nerve-racking, but I made it and was able to get fourth chair. This was one of the greatest experiences of my life because I got to spend all day studying music with others who shared the same passion as I do. Last year was my first year in marching band. At the end of the year at the school's spring concert, I was awarded the Wildcat Rookie of the Year, which was a huge achievement for my.…

I hate marching band. Leaving that trap of a class was the best decision I made in my entire high school experience. Once I had had enough of band, I joined theater. Joining theater fit my schedule well, introduced me to new people, and opened my mind to possibilities I hadn't considered before. The time I wasted in marching band was grueling.…

I think it was in third grade that I joined this choir program at school for several months. We didn't really learn anything though. We just learned how to sing kid songs but nothing about music theory. In the summer between fourth grade and fifth grade, I attended a music summer camp for a week at the Museum of Making Music on a scholarship that my elementary…

That is unfortunate because choir has always been one of my favorite experiences and I would love to have the opportunity to teach it one day. On Saturday mornings, I assist Julia Church Hoffman with the logistics of the Music Prep School and I get to see the administrative and behind the scenes tasks that it takes to run a school. During audition season (whether that's All-State or scholarship auditions) I'm often among the volunteers who help escort students to their audition…

I’ve also spent many hours participating in concert band. The William Blount High School Band has not only helped me grow as a tuba player, but the band has also helped me grow as a person. I’ve learned how to interact better with people because of band; I’ve also learned how to be an effective leader by being in the William Blount High School Band. I auditioned to be a drum major at the end of my sophomore year. Thankfully, I was awarded the position of pregame drum major.…

It is often said that teenagers begin discovering themselves in high school, but I did the opposite- I lost myself. The source of my pleasure and delight shifted from books to parties, writing to boys, and video-games to my social life. Something within me desperately craved to be normal- to no longer be the girl that gets harassed and ostracized for being an “appalling nerd” and because of this, vital aspects of my personality began to change and I morphed into an entirely different person. Through this journey, I learned that my self-hate was a catalyst for self-love and appreciation. Having always been considered an unusual girl in the eyes of my peers, I'd never been truly comfortable in my skin.…

Music lessons began before I even started school, first piano and then viola. As a child, I wasn’t given a choice, and while I didn't loathe lessons or practicing, I watched the clock and never practiced over my thirty minute requirement. At the age of ten, I got Guitar Hero 3 for Christmas, and it was love at first strum. Subsequently, I quit viola and piano and took up guitar lessons and voice lessons. Four years later, I started bass guitar.…

The subjects which I have chosen to continue at A level, are subjects which I find both stimulating and enjoyable. I have always wanted to study maths and science, over the arts, as I find that this appeals to the logical side of my mind. In general, STEM subjects come more naturally to me, and therefore, I would like to study Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry, and Physics in sixth-form, also believing that they will also be vital for the science-related job I would like to find in the future. In addition, it is a longstanding aspiration of mine to study at Cambridge University, which is a reason why I would like to attend Pate’s Sixth Form, as I believe that it will provide the optimum environment for me to work diligently to achieve what I…

When I was six years old I was first introduced to the concept of music. I sat down on the floor next to the warmth of the fireplace and listened to my stepdad strum the guitar. I was instantly entranced by what he was playing. Some blues melody that had me engrossed. Looking back the desire to play the guitar, had really just come from me looking up to my stepdad as a father figure, and perhaps wanting reciprocate what he was doing.…
