Being a second generation immigrant, I grew up living in a poverty stricken area with splinters standing tall on the wooden floorboards of what we would call home. I look back and recall a peculiarly funny yet pitiful memory of brother and mother sharing a McChicken because we were so penniless. Given the circumstances, my parents would appear to be merry for the sake of my brother and I by giving us hope for a better future. This unnatural display of emotions coming from my own parents fueled my motivation to become successful. As years passed I began to notice and analyze even small details of the world around me which, despite being ordinary and routine, was intricate. I became more interested in my opportunities, not only to help others in less humane conditions like Africa and lessen the amount of disease, but also become a more prudent human by …show more content…
With this in mind, I had promised myself to never go back into poverty and to help those in poverty. My first time exploring my opportunities was last year when I took the KSEA NMSC math exam. Before taking the exam I was nervous. The thought of screwing up made me paranoid but then I read Louis E. Boone’s quote which tells us: “Don't fear failure so much that you refuse to try new things. The saddest summary of a life contains three descriptions: could have, might have, and should have.” I filled with anticipation, awaiting my results on the exam. This test was a validation of my ability to win with my capabilities it gave me confidence to explore and learn more about how to assist those in poor conditions. The day of the dreaded test results I acquired an email addressing me as 1st place. There was a risk at failure but by placing 1st I learned that risks were not so bad; it told me that even if there was a chance of failure it’s worth taking the chance since you can gain insight and have the shot to

Michael Jordan once said, “Obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.” Being born to two immigrants, who have never completed college, and growing up in a low-income family of six individuals, I have faced nothing but a myriad of obstacles in my life. Although at times I have struggled to overcome these challenges, I have always persevered and pushed past each one with my determination to be the best I can be, which has matured me into the young adult I am today.…

My dirty, scarred and callused hands hung by my side, my God Father’s ancient mason trial gripped loosely by numb fingers. I took pride in what my hands represented to me: hard work, dedication, commitment and reward. As the blazing sun bore down on my shirtless back, I stood soaked from sweat. I felt older than my years and stared out at what I created. It was a beautiful flagstone sidewalk sparkling with variations of pale blue, fiery orange, conservative grey, and powerful purple stones.…

The medal hid under a stack of clothes inside my closet–a painful reminder of immoralities that I am capable in doing. Most people would always be jubilant when they hear they earned a prize, but instead, I just had my head down for the rest of the day, heavy with contempt. I could have went the right way, I was thinking. Each time I went out for the Writing Contest, I’ve always failed for the reason of my “stupid writing sense”, according to my lovable mom. But weeks before the 26th Emmy’s Fiction Writing Contest, I was just hit with a surge of imagination, to write something that I never even thought of before.…

My college search has brought me to many universities: visiting campuses, and talking to students, alumni, and faculty. While I could receive an excellent education from any of these schools, Notre Dame offers something "more. " I first noticed this something "more" through a contact I made with Kyle Cowdrick, ND class of 2015, who I have been emailing back and forth with over the last year about admissions, Notre Dame, and the college experience. I once asked him why he bothered to use his precious time to mentor me, someone he barely knew before, his answer: "It's the Irish way".…

What is it like to have a grown up as an alien in the United States and how has it affected you? Through the years I've incurred tremendous changes in how I view society; spurred on by the alienation I felt due to my legal status, the thirst for knowledge I possess, and my idealistic ambitions as well as positivity. Alienated as a child, I've always felt different, as if I didn’t belong. This can likely be attributed to language and cultural barriers in my early childhood when I arrived in the United States as well as knowing the disturbing fact; that I was undocumented, from the age of seven.…

From a young age I can remember always wanting to help others understand. Understand me and understand the life that was happening around them. I had a somewhat nomadic childhood, meaning I never went to the same school or lived in the same country for more than three years at a time. As a result I have always been able to tell more than what is in front of me. I am good at reading people and getting to know them well, because my relationship building had always been so accelerated.…

In such a short amount of time I have been accomplished much through school, church, and extracurricular activities. In 18 years I have lived in three different houses, attended four different schools, and have become interested in theatre arts; I have been through many, many pets and witnessed the funerals of many family members; I have attended Governors School, one of the most prestigious things for a high school student to do; and have loved every minute. It is truly crazy for a person like me to think of where they will be and what they will be doing in 15 years, the possibilities are endless, but if I needed to sit down and decided or create a plot of life I would have to start with the beginning. In the next five years of my life I see myself as a person that will grow into a greater theatrically inclined person and striving to still be better, still see the limit is nowhere in sight.…

After about six years of being an ordinary, rather unremarkable person, I finally came to the conclusion that I will never be amazing at anything. I will never be the perfect all-star varsity player, or the perfect test-taker who can get a 100% on every test without studying, or the perfect anything, actually. Many say that nobody's perfect, but I have seen people that come very close. I used to pity myself, thinking, "I can never be them." Well, I still think that way.…

My collegiate experience thus far can be described in one word: turbulent. I attended the University of Texas at Austin for five years before I withdrew from school. Originally, I was a Molecular Biology major with my sights on eventually being accepted into a medical school. After my first three years at UT-Austin, I was well on my way to reaching my goal of attending medical school; however, I had a change of heart after I came to the realization that this was not the life and career that I truly wanted. For as long as I can remember, movies and television have been my escape. No matter what was going on in my life, I could always get lost in the fantastical adventures of Star Wars or even the mundane happenings in The Office. With each new story that I consumed, my mind created five more. For me, writing just started out as a way for me to clear all of these thought-tangents out of my head.
