The Form in My Bag “And if you are interested in going to the spelling bee, make sure to tell your mom or dad so that they can fill out this form!” said my second grade teacher, only five years ago. As I heard those words, my ears perked up. I had gone to the spelling bee last year, and I had actually won fourth place! I got a ribbon and everything. As the day went on, my mind wandered to other things such as, what was for lunch today, and how long until I could go home. By that afternoon, I hardly remembered about the form. Until I my mom picked me up from school. We went about as normal. I got home, ate a snack, and sprawled out on the couch. After some time, the moment I had been dreading arrived. “Time to start your homework!” my mom …show more content…
Every day I would finish my homework, and then I would study. This went on for two weeks, until the big day actually arrived. I also got to miss school, which was like the icing on the cake. My mom drove me to the school because we were all meeting to ride there together. We rode on the bus for what seemed like forever, until we finally arrived at the school that was hosting the event. We began walking through long, confusing, well-lit hallways, until we reached a gigantic auditorium filled with students from other schools. I sat and waited until it was time, and they began to separate all the kids by grade. We slowly lined up in lines, and one by one they walked the lines out of a big wooden door. When it was time for second grade, they marched us straight down the hall into a classroom with windows everywhere. They then sat us down in alphabetical order, and introduced the judges. There was one person who called the words, one to time us, one to wrote down everything we said, and one to record us. Finally, they began to call …show more content…
It was my turn. “Spell the word, maize,” called the teacher. “May I have the definition?” I asked, careful to take every hint I could get to spell the word correctly. Once given the meaning, I froze in terror as I realized it was not the same word I had thought it was. I began to spell, “Ma…” I paused to think. This was it. “If it wasn’t spelled ‘maze’, then it would have to be with an ‘I’,” I thought to myself. I continued, “…ize.” I finished the word. Then, the moment I had been waiting for, “Congratulations, you have won the spelling bee.” I quiet, as not to show how happy I really was. They led me out of the room, and straight back into the huge auditorium. Once I had spotted my mom, I rushed over to her as fast as my second grade legs could carry me. “I won, I won!” I said with a huge smile on my face. She told me how proud she was of me, and almost squeezed me to death. At that moment, I felt like I could do

Ruta Sepetys, the writer of Between Shades of Gray, created a compelling tale about the horrors that the Lithuanians endured during World War 2. However, aside from the main story, Sepetys includes miniature flashbacks that occurred during Lina’s life in the form of short stories. These flashbacks go hand in hand with the existing circumstances, for example, the memories help Lina make decisions in the NKVD camps where she is held as a prisoner. Additionally, Lina eases her mind with thoughts of her blissful past while she is forced to perform hard labor. One of the best memory Lina uses to escape reality was when she arrived at the beet and potato farm.…

I find Spelling to be my worst subject and truly feel I will never enjoy spelling. I remember sitting in my classroom hearing the words, causing me to recite the word over and over in my head. I would attempt to sound out the words slowly, jotting down the syllables, and I recited it again. To this day I cannot spell words correctly, all I can say it “Thank you for spell check.” Three years of struggling with spelling and reading resulted in my teacher recommending some education testing be completed.…

“Don’t worry Erik, we’ll always have each other,” I would tell my brother as we ate lunch by ourselves under the playscape of the elementary school playground. Growing up as the only two Hispanic children in the small town of Arco, Idaho, I found out very quickly that other children could be the cruelest and most judgmental individuals when it came to the subject of race. Fifth grade is a cardinal year; an important milestone in everyone’s life, especially mine. With the first day approaching, and the warm summer of 2009 coming to a close, many of my peers were bursting from the seams with excitement as well as harmless cockiness; we had earned our positions as the top dogs at Pineville Elementary! With my fresh, glossy folders and binders and notebooks, and an outfit I picked out all by myself ready to go, I assured my mom she didn't have to walk me to my class on the first day. Being a fifth grader now, I couldn't have my mom embarrassing me; she did, however, steal a few quick pictures of me walking into the school. As eager as I felt about being an almost-middle-schooler, fifth grade meant something else to me.…
