College Admissions Essay: The Failure Of Perfection

Improved Essays
From the moment we were born, to the last breath we take in this world, humanity itself has always strived to reach the ultimate perfection. Society itself is obsessed over the utopian-like idea of perfection, to the point of it seemingly being projected to people as the epiphany of their human purpose. I too, became one of the countless people who became infatuated with the idea of perfection; I tried to get the perfect grades, to write the perfect speech and to live the perfect life. The concept of perfection is something that cannot be reached or can be achieved because if you have nothing to redeem then you have nothing to gain. Just as a caterpillar is to a butterfly, redemption is to success. Although they may seem like opposites, they actually are very much alike because you need one to have the other. One must recognize a fault that they have suffered and learn from it to better one’s self and eventually teach it to others. The idea of redemption through failure because perfection will not help one’s worth is evident in Sir Gawain and The Green Knight by Simon Armitage and in modern day society.…

One of the core competencies of human nature is the common desire to be extraordinary. The desire to be extraordinary drives most people towards their goals in life. This feeling is common throughout humans because everyone wants to be better than they actually are. It is natural for human beings not to settle for what they have and to crave for something more. The unlikeliest of human-beings to be truly satisfied with their lives stems from ambivalence toward complacency, competitive nature that permeates social interactions, and the futile quest for perfection.…

What is perfection? What is the point of trying to achieve it if it cannot be done on Earth? The short story, “The Birthmark” is an excellent example of a corrupt attempt at perfection. In “The Birthmark” Hawthorne uses symbolism and foreshadowing to demonstrate his conclusion that perfection is not achievable in the mortal world. Hawthorne applies numerous, straightforward examples of symbolism to validate his conclusion that perfection is not fully sustainable in the duration of life.…

A single word that describes an alternate reality that may never be witnessed by humans. Utopia, according to Oxford Dictionary, is defined as “An imagined place or state of things in which everything is perfect.” Saint Thomas More, an English 16th century philosopher, lawyer, and Renaissance humanist, published a two-part book called Utopia. The first portion relays the corruption in England through the eyes of More and a few friends as they sit in his garden chatting. The concepts they discuss such as war, stealing, murder, or even how society works in general leads to the plot of the second section of Utopia.…

Perfection isn’t a state of being, rather it’s an ambition, the light at the end of the tunnel. It’s like a cat chasing a flashlight, you can get closer to it, but you can never catch it. While perfections bright rays may burn you at first they can just as easily empower and motivate you. Brené Brown agrees.…

It is often said that teenagers begin discovering themselves in high school, but I did the opposite- I lost myself. The source of my pleasure and delight shifted from books to parties, writing to boys, and video-games to my social life. Something within me desperately craved to be normal- to no longer be the girl that gets harassed and ostracized for being an “appalling nerd” and because of this, vital aspects of my personality began to change and I morphed into an entirely different person. Through this journey, I learned that my self-hate was a catalyst for self-love and appreciation. Having always been considered an unusual girl in the eyes of my peers, I'd never been truly comfortable in my skin.…

In the midst of my youth, perfection meant everything. The sense of inferiority creeped around every corner of my life, the social pressures, the culture pressures, the personal pressures. The issue of self-acceptance began from a young age, as I often used to sit alone in the vast woods behind my house, pondering on the inevitable, ominous thought, am I good enough for the world? With the ideal image of nature surrounding me, I wished I could hold as much beauty and perfection as the world around me. Every green blade of grass swaying, golden leaf falling, every bluejay’s chirp, the colorful rustle of the breeze, they taunt my imperfections and my flaws.…

The purpose of conducting our research is to see what relationship there is between the traits of perfectionism and depression. Perfectionism is described as having an urge/need to come across as perfect and the setting of very high standards (Campbell, 2015). Hewitt and Flett (1991) describe perfectionism as being multi-dimensional and each relate differently to each individual person. These three dimensions that Hewitt and Flett concluded in their studies are self-orientated perfectionism, socially described perfectionism and other orientated perfectionism. One type of perfectionism which has been discovered is maladaptive perfectionism.…

However, I must confess that I do not consider perfection to be an impossibility, or even a possibility, but rather the actuality and reality of the infinite universe in which we live. I believe that Life is perfect, just the way it is, and that it is getting better every day. Perfection does not mean that things could not be better, or more abundant, or greater in some way. Perfection describes that state of existence to which nothing can be added, or subtracted; a whole and complete state of being that increases and improves by a greater expression of what it already is. Perfection defines the infinite, the one Life in which we live, move and have our being.…
