College Admissions Essay: The All-State Music Festival

Every Fall in the state of Iowa, thousands of music students spend several months preparing to audition for the All-State music festival. As a senior I wanted to walk into the audition room knowing that I could give the best performance I was capable of and hopefully make it into All-State. In the following weeks through summer and early fall, I immersed myself with the audition music, it played constantly in my car and I would leave class early to get in an extra practice during the day. The sheet music was marked so heavily with notes I couldn’t read the words. Once I started working towards my goal it became like a drug, it was all I could think about and my goal seemed to get nearer everyday. My choice to study architecture at Iowa State was easy, as it is nationally ranked in the top 20 and the campus is beautiful. I possess several qualities that will aid me in succeeding in college. This past Saturday I had the great honor of attending the South East Iowa Honor Band (SEIBA) auditions, a prestigious competition where music students from all of southeast Iowa have the opportunity to undergo an intense audition process including, but not limited to, arthritis from excessive preparation, mental breakdowns, glares from judges that could kill you with one look, and sugar overdoses from their wide variety of healthy options available for breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the concession stands. Alright, it’s not actually that intense, but you get the picture. This day is full of excitement and nerves and disappointment as one five minute audition stands between months of hard-work and your personal goals. Sadly enough, as important…

Before the concert began, I had noticed a large amount of chairs on stage as I found this quite interesting. As it was about to begin, a large amount of musicians wearing black appeared on the stage and were performing a small warmup. As performers, they were a guest group.…

Upper Class Student Interview As I sat down with upperclassman, Katie Klaes, an Osage native and Ag Business senior here at Iowa State University, I learned valuable information about Iowa State and the Ag Business program. Katie began her adventure at Iowa State in the fall of 2012 and is now in her final year working towards her degree in Ag Business, with a minor in Agronomy. When I asked Katie why she chose Iowa State she admitted that it was the only college she visited, but she fell in love with the campus and atmosphere Iowa State had to offer.…

As a wife of thirty years and a mother of five it was not an easy decision to return to school. I debated for years as to why I should not or could not go back to school. However, one day my pastor preached a message which has become my motto. When you start something new, you almost always start from the bottom. When you enter high school, you’re at the bottom of the food chain as a freshman. When you start a new job, you begin your training knowing close to nothing about your position. When you learn a new instrument, you must learn all the parts and their functions before even touching it. When I was in high school, I was one of the best musicians in my concert band.…
