I believed I was a failure until I came to an understanding of what I gained in the process. In second grade, I found out about the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Three years later I was allowed to compete. I won three consecutive school-wide spelling bees, placing fourth in the state of Wisconsin as a sixth grader. My eighth grade year, I was confident that I could become a four-time school champion, win my district, regional, and state bees and finally make the national competition a reality. High school is a staple of American culture. Popular culture is littered with high school imagery: cheerleaders at the homecoming game, senior prom, and finally, graduation. An excellent example of this is an emerging program commonly referred to as ‘early college high school’, a duel enrollment program that allows high school students to receive an associate’s degree while earning their high school diploma.…

Soon, the official pronouncer summons all spellers to the semicircle stage to begin a practice round. Each speller preceding me fluidly spells out each word, but when the announcer calls me to the silver microphone, I feel so nervous that I cannot hear him pronounce the word “truck.” I then ask him to define the word so that I can remember what he said, and I was met by a warranted outburst of laughter from the crowd. The announcer simply acts like I am joking, so he gives me the definition “SUV or gas guzzler.” His kindness helps me to regain my confidence, and I spell the practice word without…
