The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” A book always seemed to be in my hand when I was growing up, and whenever I got the chance, the pages were open, and I was immersed into whatever world the book allowed. I fell in love with everything about books. The pages, whether they were crisp and clean, or they were stained by coffee, and I knew they had been held and loved before me, could entertain me for hours as I flipped through them. Ultimately, I believe that my mom was the one who made me love reading and writing. She always encouraged me to read just one more chapter or continue my various fictional stories I wrote every spare chance I got. Little Turtle Elementary School also played a role in my literate upbringing. It’s interesting, really, to see some of my old papers from middle and high school. I look back and laugh at the time, maybe around the third grade, when my classmates and I would groan and complain about having to write an ENTIRE PARAGRAPH. Now, after years of writing significantly longer academic papers that stretch far beyond a simple paragraph, my style and the depth of my topics have evolved based on what I’ve read. The most important pastime for anyone who wishes to write, unsurprisingly, is to read a wide variety of material, starting at a young age. Studies have shown that children who read more than their peers exhibit a larger vocabulary as well as more complex writing styles.…

In all my 10 years of schooling, I have had no greater teacher than that of a book. They are a mighty force, and it is a shame that some would think otherwise. Each and every word alone is useless, but once transformed into sentences, pages, chapters, it’s where the magic lies. Books present us with knowledge, either factual or sentimental, that take root in our minds, and through each thought, slowly shape the way we feel and think about the world around us. How easily they influence us is both incredible and alarming, but nonetheless powerful.…

Each year, the students of my middle school dreaded only one thing about summer: “summer reading”. Not only were the required books notoriously dull, they were also difficult to relate to as a twelve-year-old with problems typical of adolescents. As an avid reader, this disappointed me. I had no issue with the written assignments about the reading that needed to be completed, but each year I was left wishing the book had been more interesting. When I was in seventh grade, this dry spell was broken for the grade above me.…

My family usually visited on Sundays after church where we would eat the meal my grandma had prepared, after which my grandpa would always read a devotion. I loved hearing my grandpa read. His voice was calming and deep, his words flowed together, only interrupted by the occasional pause to clear his throat. I loved hearing him read so much I began to grab all the books I could find in the little cupboard in the kitchen to have him read to me.…
