College Admissions Essay: Personal Communication

Decent Essays
In the past fifteen years, I have moved sixteen times. That may not seem like much—Ah, who am I kidding?—that is a lot. While there are numerous disadvantages to moving so much; like in most things, there are also many opportunities. The most appealing aspect to me is meeting new and interesting people with various backgrounds and experiences. Meeting new people and joining new organizations so frequently has not only provided me with great friends throughout the world, but has also helped me develop my personal communication skills. With each new move, I have become more effective at meeting, relating to, and befriending people, as well as assimilating into groups and organizations. After building both a 40 Soldier platoon and a 140 Soldier company into effective fighting teams, I have also become more adept at identifying and maximizing others’ strengths while mitigating their weaknesses. …show more content…

Coupled with this knowledge and experience, I will use the interpersonal skills gained from my nomadic lifestyle to actively participate in and contribute to classroom discussions, as well as activities and study groups outside of the classroom. I will also use my knowledge, experience, and communication skills during team projects to organize, lead, and advise, as well as resolve conflicts when things get

More specifically, when I reflect on the activities I had to undergo during relocation, I suppose moving from California to New Jersey was the toughesr. The atmosphere of each area had their own significant differences—the attitudes and requirements for social acceptance. Not to mention, I had to leave behind my beloved friends, a comfortable home, and a life I had grown accustomed to. I remember the fun I had while playing…

Assuming the leadership responsibilities within a group and being a reliable team member continues to be a role that suits me well. In the Marine Corps, I enhanced these personal attributes in ways that would apply both to everyday life and in teaching others. During my transition from military to academic culture, I sought to preserve these values and contagiously transfer world-renowned leadership traits to those seeking them. I applied a diverse, yet open-minded perspective to the academic setting to share my experience in a constructive manner. I look forward to continuing to bring the military values I 've learned in business and legislative venues.…

Moving for my dad's job hurt me, but it also changed a lot of things for me. For me, going from sunny California to bipolar South Dakota was huge. From what I thought was cold weather in Cali to getting here in December is definitely something I won’t ever forget. California's winter temperatures are like South Dakota's fall temperatures. Now when I go back home, and people are complaining about 40 degree weather, I just tell them that it's nothing compared to here.…

It is often said that teenagers begin discovering themselves in high school, but I did the opposite- I lost myself. The source of my pleasure and delight shifted from books to parties, writing to boys, and video-games to my social life. Something within me desperately craved to be normal- to no longer be the girl that gets harassed and ostracized for being an “appalling nerd” and because of this, vital aspects of my personality began to change and I morphed into an entirely different person. Through this journey, I learned that my self-hate was a catalyst for self-love and appreciation. Having always been considered an unusual girl in the eyes of my peers, I'd never been truly comfortable in my skin.…

Like most people in military communities, it’s hard to point out my home on a map. While moving every few years predisposed me to revel in challenges and unfamiliar territories, it also posed significant challenges. When my family moved to Naples in 2008, from the massive cosmopolitan capital of Seoul to rural, grungy Naples, it was challenging in ways my family could have never anticipated. However, working and living in multicultural communities overseas has given me a global perspective, positive attitude, and strong interpersonal skills that transcend languages and cultures. I rely on these skills in a number of jobs, including an administrative position that routinely dealt with foreign dignitaries, an internship at a global nonprofit, and an IT desk coordinating and setting up large-scale media events, to name a few.…

While sitting in the back of the Physics classroom on a routine school day working out problems and taking down notes I am suddenly struck with “James, how do you find the resultant force?”. With all eyes turned on me, and my invisibility compromised, this inescapable question is followed by a red face and an uncontrollable sweat. Whenever a question hits me, I wonder if I can survive the next few torturous minutes. After the brief shock, all eyes are looking forward again giving me time to realize I can survive catastrophes like these whether I answer right or wrong. Nevertheless, my anxiety keeps me captive whenever I am put on the spot.…

For my entire life, I always believed that when I reached two points in my life I would be an adult with the world at my fingertips. One of those points was turning sixteen years old. I thought that being sixteen would automatically make me an adult, like what happens in the Disney movies I grew up watching. I was fortunate enough to get my license and my first job at sixteen, getting my first taste at the adult world. Being sixteen did not automatically make me an adult…

Before I moved to NJ, I had switched more than five schools in ten years, moving city to city, from Delhi to Chennai to Kolkata to Hyderabad, and made new friends without a hitch. I had developed an ability to quickly adapt to new schools then. But now, the change was sudden — the change was transcontinental. The first few months of high school in a new country felt lonesome and nerve-racking.…

Being from a family where your father has worked in the oil field you tend to move around a lot due to transfers. My first move was when I was in second grade I was mortified at first, but then after sixth grade things started to get easier when making friends.
