Improved Essays
Participating in Panther Athletics has had a tremendous role in making me into the person I am today. I have participated in volleyball, diving, and gymnastics over the course of my high school career. Participating in volleyball taught me so much about myself. It showed me how desperately I desire to succeed. After five years of participating in volleyball, I still had no idea what success looked like for me in that sport, so senior year I joined the diving team instead. Diving is terrifying. This sport challenged me immensely. Looking at the water, knowing that in five seconds I will be flying through the air and suddenly hear the loud smack of my skin hitting the surface and later cringing at the bruises the water left me with. I was scared of getting hurt, not being good enough for varsity, but most of all, I was scared that my mind would get in the way of my goals. Gymnasts are required to be mentally tough because if you’re not, you won’t make it. I cannot count the number of times I have fallen flat on my face, left blood on the bars after a bad rip, or left the gym bawling because I felt I disappointed myself or my team. All of these hurdles have made me stronger because experiencing them become worth it the second I stick a routine, or the moment my coach hugs me after I put my heart and soul into a performance, knowing that she is proud of what I just did. Someone is so genuinely proud of what I have accomplished. Bleeding, crying, sweating, and screaming over this sport is worth it because I know someone is proud of me whether that is a coach, my parents, God, or myself. Athletics have taught me to be proud of myself. Participating in athletics has influenced the way I view life. To me, life is a challenge. But in all honesty sports have taught me a lot about people, life and even myself. I have been a part of many teams in my lifetime and played several abstract sports, but at Summit Academy High School the sports are very unique. There are mixed attitudes towards the teams, players and coaches that you would not see at any other school. But I like to call them obstacles and challenges.…

I now do not have a problem speaking in front of people or leading a team to achieve a goal. It allowed me to be bold in myself and know that anything is possible if I set my mind to it. Along with that, it gave me self-appreciation; I am proud of my accomplishment, but I am also proud that my hard work paid off with a state championship. Sports allow you to be able to look back to the past and see that your hard work did not go to waste. Children need that more than ever because growing up with the technology we have now, many of them sit at home all day on their mobile or tablet device instead of getting out and working hard.…

Students that have been privileged with an athletic scholarship to play in collegiate sports have to understand that it is not a profession but a linkage to develop contacts with influencers and gatekeepers that will impact their future success into the national leagues or other areas of interest. These student athletes should not be concerned with receiving an annual salary or monthly stipend but focused on the most important component of obtaining a higher education which is to achieve academic success in a sound environment and develop professional skills to become an informed, efficient graduate and integrating those educational experiences into their profession as they make the transition after graduation. Most adults’ favorite memories are from their past years participating in sporting events throughout their high school careers. They may not have realized it at the time, but they created memories and friendships to last a lifetime. High school athletes of future generations could not have the opportunity to invent vivid, unforgettable memories and such close relationships as our older generations had the chance to do. Not only could our future students miss out on memories and fun, but they could lack the life skills which athletes gain from participating in sports. High schools should continue to offer sports to provide students with leadership skills, opportunities for community involvement, and college scholarships to prepare for a bright,…

To gain insight into the life of female student athletes I interviewed a female student athlete at Wright State University. Gabrielle is a senior studying Sports Science who runs Track and Field. From my conversation with her I could see how proud she was of discipline, strong work ethic, and positive attitude. It seems that she felt as if academic and psychological resources are ample for student athletes and that the support she has found here at Wright State has made her undergraduate degree more enjoyable. Despite these positive feelings about student athletes, she expressed that she was always busy, is board with team drama, has had injuries, and is constantly exhausted.…
