College Admissions Essay: Obstacles In Life

Although not the most eloquent of words, I could tell my mother had a point, “It’s up to you how it makes you feel.” These words have stayed in my mind ever since I can remember. Obstacles in life are inevitable but there's a sort of beauty in the struggle. Would a dancer be any good without the pain on her feet? A gymnast without the sores on her hands? The same goes for me. Being an immigrant from Peru, I’ve had my fair share of deterrents. I have a scar, half an inch thick and a foot long down my chest. A constant reminder of the day I got open heart surgery in one of the poorest countries in latin America. Instead of being thankful for my chance to have survived a surgery with less than 10% survival rate, I was a pessimist. Maybe it was adolescence, ignorance or just a lack of appreciation: for two years in high school I let this mindset control me. The answer arrived late in my junior year, those nine words my mother told me finally had some relevance. The vibrancy of happiness fills my being even on the rainiest day. My yearning to learn has never sparked brighter in my core. I'm interested in the unpredictability in science, the absoluteness of math, the art in english and the competitiveness of sports. My aspirations find leverage in the distinct aspects of my life. My hope is to join a school that not only gives it’s students quality education but an aspiration to reach their optimum competency. I surround myself with friends that inspire me to gain more intellectual experiences.
