Decent Essays
Growing up I never had an educational goal. I never had a career plan. The closest thing I had to either was hoping to get a construction job with my cousins. I was born in Mexico and moved to the US when I was seven. I was in ESL (English as a Second Language) until fourth grade when I was finally became “a good reader and speaker”. Neither of my parents finished high school and the highest educational achievement goal my parents had for me was to at least get my GED. Then something strange happened, I realized I liked science, I liked to read and I realized that I actually really liked school. There were many times in my life where I could have settled. I could have learned English and slacked through school, but I wanted to learn more. I could have settled for my high school diploma, but I wanted honors. I considered majoring in general business, but I knew I could do more; Science, specifically microbiology, was my calling. Most recently I was minoring in food safety so I could get a bachelor’s and get a job after graduation but I knew within me that I can still do more. I want to challenge myself. My own experience as a five-year-old second-degree burn victim in the Glenwood Springs, Colorado small community hospital’s emergency room never evaporates from my adult decision-making. “You will hurt” was the message my seven-year-old sister relayed to me in our native Spanish language as the staff arduously worked to clean and debride my thigh. No translators were available, and my family circled in shared fear as well as linguistic isolation. Immigrant families who live in camper shells are certainly more at risk for childhood injuries, yet observing the compassionate and diligent efforts of trained medical professionals reacting to my accident sparked my current goal of becoming a Physician Assistant despite the financial and cultural…

Coming into college I found I only had a passion for one thing, soccer. I have played soccer since I was four years old, so the opportunity to play collegiate soccer is the sole reason I decided to attend Concordia University Irvine, but little did I know this would be the best decision of my life thus far for a much different reason. Within my first semester I had changed my major three times. I applied to Concordia as a psychology major, then switched to business, and finally found my calling as a mass communication major with a minor in business administration. My first semester of college I was enrolled in a public speaking course and found I enjoyed the material much more than any of my other classes.…

Being a first generation student and being completely clueless about my future beyond high school was a conflict that I spend most of my teenage years overcoming. Throughout my whole entire life I grew up always being told the same words of “you can be whatever you want”. I didn’t understand what people meant when they said I can achieve anything I wanted because I knew the reality of society was against this becoming real. With parents that came to this country seeking for new opportunities and having no background information about college or how to be a success, they really could not help me with all of my ever…
