An unusually fragile underclassman: devoid of faith and fearful of a new environment brimming with the cold embrace of the unknown. “What do you like about yourself?” Sitting in the audience, listening to an assembly during my freshman orientation of high school, this existential question hit me like a tidal wave—initially destructive yet ultimately metamorphic.

Those around me blessed with a wealth of confidence from a young age beamed with vanity: athletes, scholars, musicians and those exceptionally precocious few with the ability to thrive in multiple environments. What had I achieved? I was neither passionate nor talented; neither inquisitive nor ambitious. Embarrassed and self-conscious, my face grew red and my heart raced as I struggled to determine portions of my life to be proud of; there were none. Why was

Working closely with teachers and advisors, my academic transcript—both in terms of course selection and grades—made strides as I now understood my true potential. My connections with family and peers strengthened through the unbreakable bonds of love and friendship. Through a common passion, I have been exposed to the most diverse and fascinating group of individuals—all with their own two cents on life—many of whom to this day remain my closest friends. Never again would I determine my worth based upon how I stacked against others—my happiness came from within. Weightlifting had revealed a new way of life. Whether it be through academic tutoring, my position as a Peer Leader to underclassman, or even personally training my close friends and peers in the gym, it remains my obligation to guide those surrounding me towards an understanding of their inner strength and—in turn—an unshakable source of

“Don’t worry Erik, we’ll always have each other,” I would tell my brother as we ate lunch by ourselves under the playscape of the elementary school playground. Growing up as the only two Hispanic children in the small town of Arco, Idaho, I found out very quickly that other children could be the cruelest and most judgmental individuals when it came to the subject of race. Comments like “Why are you here?” and “No one here likes you! ” seemed to summarize my entire existence.…

Transitioning from middle school to high school is scary enough, not to mention finding out that your best friends won’t be attending that same school adds a little pressure on a pre-teen who, for the most part is really shy. When I first started high school I had a cousin who was a year older than me, she showed me around school and I ended up hanging out with her and her friends for a few months. Then she introduced me to some of her newer friends who were in the same grade as me. They were nice people and they got me through the first year of high school, but I never felt like I belonged to “their group”.…

One of my favorite childhood shows was Little Bill. In one particular episode, Little Bill goes in search of his special thing. He journeyed through his home, asking his family members what their “things” were. His brother enjoyed playing the violin, his sister excelled at basketball and his father loved to relax to the sound of his favorite jazz tunes. None of those things suited Little Bill and so his wandering continued.…

A young woman had just arrived for her first day of school and begun to stroll down the sidewalk, but her easygoing expression had soon been stricken with fear. Had I not known better, I could have believed that I was witnessing a rock concert; however, nothing but rage and hatred derided from the crowd. As a sophomore myself, I did not much care for trying to wade through a crowd of that size and temperament. The night prior, nothing but gossip filled the air about “Why does it have to be his school that has to be first?” It wasn’t until years later that I could possibly understand the gravity of the situation before me, but at the time I simply saw her as another peer.…

It is often said that teenagers begin discovering themselves in high school, but I did the opposite- I lost myself. The source of my pleasure and delight shifted from books to parties, writing to boys, and video-games to my social life. Something within me desperately craved to be normal- to no longer be the girl that gets harassed and ostracized for being an “appalling nerd” and because of this, vital aspects of my personality began to change and I morphed into an entirely different person. Through this journey, I learned that my self-hate was a catalyst for self-love and appreciation. Having always been considered an unusual girl in the eyes of my peers, I'd never been truly comfortable in my skin.…

My love for learning began when I was small. I grew up as the youngest of four siblings and was an extremely curious, independent, and stubborn child. When my siblings did something I wanted to be doing it as well, if not better than they had. When my sister started kindergarten, I was 4; when she came home with homework my mom copied it for me, and I would plop myself down at the kitchen table to do homework with her. When it was finally my turn to enter kindergarten, I already knew how to count to 100.…

Passions in Paradise College, the word that continues to terrify students for generations. According the Nelson Mandela, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Unfortunately, the value for a good education has taken a toll on many students across the state. They are often forced to change their passion due to their low income and high university prices. Although most result to community colleges, they are unable to receive job offers due to their competition.…

The heat from the stage lights, the watchful gazes of the audience, and the sweat dripping off of our faces as we struggle to remember our lines, these sensations of being on stage are what caused the performing arts to become not only an activity, but also a passion and an unexpected source of personal growth. Through my experiences in drama and music I have been able to discover my own meaning of fulfillment and define who the person behind my appearance truly is. My passion in the performing arts started when I was a young child first learning to play the violin. Picking up the violin at the age of 6, I became stuck on one of the most basic songs for almost a whole year. At that time no one believed that I could play the violin, my teacher thought that I was too hyperactive and even my mom attempted to convince me to quit.…

My passion is creating a picture of what I see in my mind on a piece of paper with a pencil, pen or crayon, also known as drawing. My love for the arts was set on creating images that were thought of and putting them on paper. I always drew what came to mind from what was seen from a movie or television show. I enjoyed drawing things or characters that interested me and I was free to draw it however I wanted to, although I always wanted the drawing to be as perfect as possible.…

I needed something, anything, to provide that welcome step from mediocrity. I found the vehicle of my revitalization in the form of a sport: football. I had never been particularly adept in the sport because, I came to find, I had never sufficiently applied myself. I realized that this was true, not just on the field, but in the classroom as well. I staggered through school haphazardly for most of my life, never comprehending what it actually meant to work; to earn something and reap the fruit of one’s own labor.…
