As long as I can remember I have always had a passion for science. I have always been curious about the why and how of things, and have been fascinated with exploring all there is to know about the Earth.

Science is such a complex subject, with many different areas and fields of study, there is always more to learn. When I was younger I remember being excited to join my first Science Olympiad team, and have the opportunity to aggrandize my knowledge about the different fields of science in a more in depth setting. The first event I ever won a medal for was Anatomy and Physiology, and I was immediately hooked. My curiosity for science only grew and multiplied as I became older and soon I found myself joining an increased number of clubs related to the field and taking higher level science courses. My sophomore year of high school, I was able to join my schools Envirothon team and compete in the first ever Wayne County Competition. It was exciting to have another opportunity to explore this blooming interest of mine. The team used to have a practice before school on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, we would all come in at 5:00 am and do two hours of studying before classes started. Those mornings were a great deal of discovery, along with many laughs. We all had a passion for science discovering new things together.

My interest in physics was initially ignited during my sophomore year. I signed up for AP Physics 1, taught by a teacher in his first year, right out of college. His main goal was to encourage students to apply physics to the world around them and identify the relevancy of the course material. I was immediately hooked and I bought book after book about Einstein's Theory of Relativity, the Big Bang, and quantum mechanics. I was eager to learn as much as I could; in doing so, I realized that working in a laboratory setting, conducting experiments and applying equations, is something that I am truly passionate about.…

An unusually fragile underclassman: devoid of faith and fearful of a new environment brimming with the cold embrace of the unknown. “What do you like about yourself?” Sitting in the audience, listening to an assembly during my freshman orientation of high school, this existential question hit me like a tidal wave—initially destructive yet ultimately metamorphic. Those around me blessed with a wealth of confidence from a young age beamed with vanity: athletes, scholars, musicians and those exceptionally precocious few with the ability to thrive in multiple environments.…

Marine biology has always been a passion of mine ever since I first heard about it when I was four years old. My family has a deep-running connection to the ocean so when they realized how interested I was in science, they suggested marine biology. I loved the concept of studying unknown creatures that sit miles below the surface of our planet that no human has ever seen. I’ve read many textbooks and field guides over the years, which started as an amusing pastime. However, the more I read, the more I became completely and utterly engrossed in the subject which eventually shaped me into what I am today.…

For just a moment, close your eyes and imagine that you see a small research boat bobbing gently in the rolling waves of a boundless aquamarine sea. From the surface, the seafloor appears to be a tangled swirl of blue rocks and white patches of sand; however, if you leave the world of air-breathing creatures and dive into the warm water, you will find quite a different scene. Mounds of colorful coral wind in intersecting avenues far out of sight, and countless schools of fish circle in rocky canyons and hide beneath the corals. Look to your left and you will see me and my teammates: we are over by a clump of white, unhealthy coral, examining it to discover the source of its distress. In a few hours my team and I will be back in the lab reviewing data, but right now I am enjoying the sunshine.…

The heat from the stage lights, the watchful gazes of the audience, and the sweat dripping off of our faces as we struggle to remember our lines, these sensations of being on stage are what caused the performing arts to become not only an activity, but also a passion and an unexpected source of personal growth. Through my experiences in drama and music I have been able to discover my own meaning of fulfillment and define who the person behind my appearance truly is. My passion in the performing arts started when I was a young child first learning to play the violin. Picking up the violin at the age of 6, I became stuck on one of the most basic songs for almost a whole year. At that time no one believed that I could play the violin, my teacher thought that I was too hyperactive and even my mom attempted to convince me to quit.…

I want to become a physician-scientist because I want to work at the interface between basic science research, which has the power to elucidate new knowledge, and clinical medicine, which has the ability to translate scientific discoveries to a deliverable form that can directly help the patients in need. For three years, I studied the role of tumor microenvironment on breast cancer metastasis in Dr. Semenza’s laboratory at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. As I studied the role of Hypoxia-inducible factor on integrin expression and subsequent cell motility, I learnt that cancer is a multi-faceted disease that consists of a web of multiple biological mechanisms as well as other arenas of science. Having exposed myself to…

As the only child of a Professor, whose background is in Political studies, I was advised by my parents to move away from the field of Science and study Art. This was during my high school years, I was quite rebellious and decided to pursue my passion of Science even though they requested me to go to another path. My parents continued to try to influence my decision when I was admitted to the university, stating that Economics would be a good major to pursue and it will also give a good life. However, I rejected the thought and insisted that I will pursue my passion, which is in the fields of Physics and Microelectronics; I really wanted to study the most difficult subjects. During my junior year of college, my parents wished that I would continue my graduate studies at a top university in China, but my dream is to continually pursue my passion of science in America.…
