Throughout my childhood, and even in present time, my mother, along with the rest of my family, presses the importance of education. All of my life, I have been told that the harder I work in school, the greater it will pay out in my later life. I turned this into a somewhat life motto. An unusually fragile underclassman: devoid of faith and fearful of a new environment brimming with the cold embrace of the unknown. “What do you like about yourself?” Sitting in the audience, listening to an assembly during my freshman orientation of high school, this existential question hit me like a tidal wave—initially destructive yet ultimately metamorphic. Those around me blessed with a wealth of confidence from a young age beamed with vanity: athletes, scholars, musicians and those exceptionally precocious few with the ability to thrive in multiple environments.…

I grew up in what is considered a low income family, but I’ve always wanted to go to college. Before I even understood the concept of degrees, I would tell my parents “I want to go to college for seven years!” because I thought we could just choose how long we could go to college for. As I grew up, my goals became realistic. Instead of being president, however, I now want to do something that involves helping others and educating.…

1 I come from a long line of educators and administrators on both sides of my family. Various relatives of mine have taught me to understand and appreciate the importance of education. This being the case, they have inspired my decision to be a teacher, preferably an elementary school teacher. Last year, I sat in on my aunt’s third grade class at Washington Irving, an elementary school in my district that I attended for three years. After visiting the classroom a handful of times, I absolutely fell in love.…

It is often said that teenagers begin discovering themselves in high school, but I did the opposite- I lost myself. The source of my pleasure and delight shifted from books to parties, writing to boys, and video-games to my social life. Something within me desperately craved to be normal- to no longer be the girl that gets harassed and ostracized for being an “appalling nerd” and because of this, vital aspects of my personality began to change and I morphed into an entirely different person. Through this journey, I learned that my self-hate was a catalyst for self-love and appreciation. Having always been considered an unusual girl in the eyes of my peers, I'd never been truly comfortable in my skin.…

The heat from the stage lights, the watchful gazes of the audience, and the sweat dripping off of our faces as we struggle to remember our lines, these sensations of being on stage are what caused the performing arts to become not only an activity, but also a passion and an unexpected source of personal growth. Through my experiences in drama and music I have been able to discover my own meaning of fulfillment and define who the person behind my appearance truly is. My passion in the performing arts started when I was a young child first learning to play the violin. Picking up the violin at the age of 6, I became stuck on one of the most basic songs for almost a whole year. At that time no one believed that I could play the violin, my teacher thought that I was too hyperactive and even my mom attempted to convince me to quit.…

The other most import thing when it comes to commitment in vocational living is purpose and meaning one must have the passion to live his/her calling in life. It does do not mean anything if a person knows his true calling but does not have the passion to achieve it or to act on it. For example, musicians or artist they have the gift and talent but when they add their passion to it takes their talent to another level touching many people life hopefully in a good way. Passion is the driving force for one to push forward. For me my passion of wanting to help others helped me to push through nursing school hardship successfully and now I’m standing at the very end of my nursing school soon to take NCLEX and start touching people life in many ways…

I am someone who learns things not because they have to, but because they love to. Although my main focus is in engineering, I have a passion for all other subjects. From a young age, I have been an avid reader. So much so that I would choose to spend the whole day reading rather than working on a homework assignment sometimes. I loved losing myself in science fiction novels, thinking of the infinite possibilities that technology allowed us to explore.…

This focus on the importance of education became something that was passed down through my brothers and me. Now more than ever, I recognize that without education, much of my personal and professional goals cannot be accomplished. While education did not seem like a priority for my grandparents, for me it is an absolute necessity. It is a necessity that I will continue to carry throughout my future because my parents proved to me that education is the best way to exceed…
