My biggest passion is dance. It has consumed my time most of my life, but I do not mind, especially when I enjoy it so much. Knowing myself, I would not last as a professional dancer. Teaching is a part of my passion for dance, and I just want to give my knowledge to other people, and to have a valuable legacy left, behind me. My thinking is that this is a stupendous idea. An unusually fragile underclassman: devoid of faith and fearful of a new environment brimming with the cold embrace of the unknown. “What do you like about yourself?” Sitting in the audience, listening to an assembly during my freshman orientation of high school, this existential question hit me like a tidal wave—initially destructive yet ultimately metamorphic. Those around me blessed with a wealth of confidence from a young age beamed with vanity: athletes, scholars, musicians and those exceptionally precocious few with the ability to thrive in multiple environments.…

I express my creativity through singing. For as long as my family and I can remember, I have loved to sing. In elementary school, I was always the shy and quiet type, but when I went to choir practice after school, I felt like I really belonged somewhere. But as much as I love to sing, I wasn't always good at it. At choir practice, I always sang as loud as I could, sometimes to the dismay of my choir director.…

Apart from the physical technique, dance has developed my identity and given me some useful skills. It has given me independence and self discipline. Dance teachers can give corrections to one student and the entire class is expected to apply the instruction. This gives dancers like myself the self control and self discipline to correct themselves when they falter, to admit their faults, and to take correction without insult. It also gave me the ability to sew and use my resources.…

Simply put, I love dancing. I like moving my hips to the beat, feeling the rhythm inside my body like an electrical surge, enjoying every second of the music. Years have passed since I first started dancing, but I still have the same enthusiasm as if I am performing for the very first time whenever I hear a song that I danced to. Yet, dancing can be exceptionally intimidating and challenging, so much that I question my rationality at times.…

The large speakers that surround the filled room begin to vibrate as the loud unknown voice begins to announce my name. I now know that it is my time to shine. While standing behind the long, red curtains I begin to do what comes natural; lifting my head as if I am looking above and beyond the ceiling that lies above me with a smile projecting from my face, standing tall with strong energy from my toes to the tips of my fingers and pushing my shoulders back to respectfully greet my judges. The adrenaline pounds in my chest, but confidence over powers and I am nothing but ready to entertain my audience. The loud roars of encouraging chanting and cheering rings in my ears as I walk towards the spotlight that gives off a warm radiant heat where I hit my beginning position.…

My home was never silent there was always music playing in the living room, the sounds of drums being banged on or guitar amps booming from the basement. If you ask my mother she might tell you this was bothersome but if you ask me it was perfect.…

The heat from the stage lights, the watchful gazes of the audience, and the sweat dripping off of our faces as we struggle to remember our lines, these sensations of being on stage are what caused the performing arts to become not only an activity, but also a passion and an unexpected source of personal growth. Through my experiences in drama and music I have been able to discover my own meaning of fulfillment and define who the person behind my appearance truly is. My passion in the performing arts started when I was a young child first learning to play the violin. Picking up the violin at the age of 6, I became stuck on one of the most basic songs for almost a whole year. At that time no one believed that I could play the violin, my teacher thought that I was too hyperactive and even my mom attempted to convince me to quit.…

In dance, you learn quickly that without pure dedication and drive you will never be successful. While talent can come naturally, skill and technique only come with hard work. I spent countless hours in dance studios growing up, working tirelessly to hone these skills and perfect technique. A lifetime of dance taught me what it means to have discipline and dedication to a craft, values which I have also seen reflected in my clinical experiences. Medicine is a practice which calls for just as much discipline, dedication, and drive.…

From my last year of study, there has not been much that has changed from my perception of ballet. So far, I noticed that I made progress in improving my technique as well as having a clearer focus while learning the combinations in class. I want to improve in whatever way possible to make sure that I can keep on top of my technique, especially since I look forward to striving forward through this semester as a continuation of last semester. On the first day back of the new semester, I already knew that I wanted to break some of the bad habits that I had and wanted to find any way possible to make the goals a primary focus. Even though I have my strengths and weaknesses, I want to further myself this semester to grow as a dancer by breaking some old habits that are holding me back.…
