Improved Essays
I’ve always been the type of student who puts a lot of pressure on herself. Generally, I get good results too; my grades are top notch. The journey there, however, isn’t always pretty. I used to stress myself out to the point of panic attacks, often over things that weren’t worth it: a test that was below my usual standard, an essay that I didn’t think was good enough, a math concept that I didn’t immediately understand. My mind became a cluttered and noisy place, full of worries, doubts, and “what ifs”. Then I began running. There are few things I love more than a long run, when my only thought is to push my body to go faster, farther. It’s incredibly freeing, because when I run my mind is blissfully free of all that stress, and when I’m finished,

Three years ago, as a freshman, I decided to join cross country. This decision has shaped my high school career through the friends I chose to the activities I participated in. Cross country is not an easy sport, though. It requires physical endurance, but more importantly, the mental strength to push past and overcome the obstacle of pain. By sticking with this sport, mental toughness has permeated who I am and helped me go beyond the standards and work my way through trivial challenges and huge endeavors alike.…

As I am learning to master the art of running I realize that it takes a tremendous amount of hard work and dedication, more than I realized. You have to change your lifestyle, from what you eat and drink to the amount of exercise and training you put in on a daily basis, to the amount of sleep you get and also having the mindset and discipline of a runner. One of the hardest things about being a long distance runner is the realization that you are racing yourself and your watch; trying to beat your previous best time. Just as Oprah Winfrey says “Running is the greatest metaphor for life, because you get out what you put into it.” Life can be hard and seem unfair at times, such as when you are running and you beat your own record time, but…

Ralph Waldo Emerson's quote, "Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow", is a great and relatable quote for life. I strongly agree with this statement because I have experienced events in my life that caused me to discover myself and the world around me. Through school, athletics, and church activities, I was able to go beyond my comfort zone and participate in activities that I never thought I would do. In grade school, the work that was assigned came easily to me.…

I began my first year of high school a tiny, easily overlooked girl with maybe two friends on a good day and almost no hobbies. My routine of attending school, going home, doing my work, and going to sleep simply wasn’t cutting it. With the reaction time close to that of a garden slug and the coordination of a newborn giraffe, it was clear to me that taking up a sport would only end in my own mortification and probable injury. However, after a bit of research, I found the perfect option: cross country. No contact, complicated game plans, or heavy equipment required.…

Music to the Ears If you mess up just once in your life, it could affect your future. In the ninth grade, I came close to ending my music career by simply dropping out from the choir program in anger of not getting into my choir of choice. But if I went through with this choice, I would have felt empty. With the help of my brother who was a senior and has been in the program all four years, I was not only put in my choir of choice later that week from exemplifying stellar job work, but also continuing the beginning of my musical journey. I am now a vocalist who has been happily singing in a choir for four years.…

It is often said that teenagers begin discovering themselves in high school, but I did the opposite- I lost myself. The source of my pleasure and delight shifted from books to parties, writing to boys, and video-games to my social life. Something within me desperately craved to be normal- to no longer be the girl that gets harassed and ostracized for being an “appalling nerd” and because of this, vital aspects of my personality began to change and I morphed into an entirely different person. Through this journey, I learned that my self-hate was a catalyst for self-love and appreciation. Having always been considered an unusual girl in the eyes of my peers, I'd never been truly comfortable in my skin.…
