College Admissions Essay: My Love Of Science

Decent Essays
My love for science and math didn’t spur from natural talent, but rather from curiosity when I was young. In elementary school my best friend was one of the smartest kids in the school. I, however, was the more creative one and was always in my head. I was almost always lost in my imagination. As time went on, he began to tell me what he learned in the advanced classes and it interested me. Then in fourth grade my family and I moved to Illinois. I was in a new place, a new school, and had lots of new opportunities. Near the end of that year, I took a placement test in my new school. This placed me in advanced mathematics. When I was a young girl, pencils and paintbrushes were practically extensions of my fingers. I may not have been able to recite the alphabet or count to 26, but with a box of magic markers, I had 1,000 words at my fingertips. My first few years of school consisted of many parent-teacher meetings that revolved around the fact that it seemed impossible to keep me from scribbling sloppy stars and smiley faces on every assignment. That is until one day, I finally found a subject that I was truly interested in, and could also benefit from my hobbies and talents: science. I came to love science because it is fascinating, constantly changing, and most aspects of the subject allowed me to expand my mind further than my imagination.…

Math had always came easily to me. I was known as the math know-it-all because I would be finished with homework assignments before class was even over. Thus, in ninth grade, my Algebra I teacher told me that I should go into a honor level math class. My first honors level class was a breeze to me. We could hand in homework late, revise tests and quizzes, and had perfect notes given to us in class.…

There haven’t been many constants in my life so far, but my love for and almost reliance on sports has been one of the most consistent things that I have come to know. Growing up in a huge, Catholic family of seven children was destined to be a place where athletics thrived; although we never quite had enough kids for even teams. I had an interesting introduction to sports; when I was about one-year old, my parents moved my whole family from our home of Akron, Ohio to Manchester, Vermont, where we lived for six years while my family owned our own popcorn business. In Vermont I was exposed to many extreme sports such as skiing, snowboarding, and snowmobiling, while still being immersed in the New England and Boston team culture that many Northeasterners are faithful to. When we returned to Akron in 2003, it was one-year…

Ever since I can remember I have been preoccupied with music. As a child I remember obsessing over my dad's CD collection and spending lengthy afternoons just listening to them with him. My home was never silent there was always music playing in the living room, the sounds of drums being banged on or guitar amps booming from the basement. If you ask my mother she might tell you this was bothersome but if you ask me it was perfect.…

My perspectives and life completely changed when I was accepted into Bioscience High School. Being admitted was a huge achievement because the application and interview process was rigorous. One of the requirements for the application was to create a binder portfolio that would represent my worth ethic and what I could offer to the school. Now, I have experienced what it is like to be part of the Bioscience community. At first, the teaching methods and their curriculum was difficult to adjust to because their constructivist ways of teaching was different from the traditional way of education I had been in all of my life.…

I have always been a high achiever, someone who wants to do well in what they do. I was homeschooled from first through eighth grade, and so I taught myself quite frequently. However, as I grew older, I began to think about college, and about where I will be by then. This led to thinking about if I will possess enough knowledge about both simple school related things, and dealing with a school setting. I had never had to sit through classes, or deal with the unique social setting of school.…

I want to become a physician-scientist because I want to work at the interface between basic science research, which has the power to elucidate new knowledge, and clinical medicine, which has the ability to translate scientific discoveries to a deliverable form that can directly help the patients in need. For three years, I studied the role of tumor microenvironment on breast cancer metastasis in Dr. Semenza’s laboratory at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. As I studied the role of Hypoxia-inducible factor on integrin expression and subsequent cell motility, I learnt that cancer is a multi-faceted disease that consists of a web of multiple biological mechanisms as well as other arenas of science. Having exposed myself to…

My passion for economics begun during my eighth grade year. Being a kid who had no financial obligations, I saved up every dollar I received for a few years and had amassed a decent sum of money. My dad suggested that I invest monies in short-term stock options to build up more money, so I agreed to give him five-hundred dollars. My dad controlled the brokerage account, but we worked together in finding wise investments.
