College Admissions Essay: My Love Of My Life

I love meeting new people. I love traveling and experiencing new places. Learning about different ways of life and how people are connected to each other in the world makes me feel alive and involved in a unique way that transcends geography.

I also love biology. Over my school years, biology is the academic subject that I’ve been most drawn to because it fascinates and encourages -me to challenge my mind to think in new ways. Additionally, oddly enough, biology connects my love of science with my love of the world around me.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines biology as the “science of things that are alive.” However, beyond a dictionary or science textbook, the word biology means so much more. Biology is the key to understanding the world around us, the people around us and even ourselves. It is a subject that extends far beyond the walls of a classroom and encapsulates the things in my life that have inspired and motivated me. That is the biology I love.

However, it wasn’t until my family moved to London, England, when I was starting 7th grade, that the random bits of my life began to draw together. My time in London provided me with amazing opportunities to explore life beyond my small hometown of Chappaqua, New York, because, suddenly, so much of

The oncology center is no bigger than a small classroom, and, this morning, there were mice scurrying around on the floor when we walked in for rounds. Today, I helped prepare the cancer patients for their treatment and assisted the pathologist in performing fine needle aspirations on several patients in order to get cell samples of their tumors. In the afternoon I helped to organize and compartmentalize each patient’s clinical records, as there are no electronic files like we have in the United States. Did you know that in Malawi, there are only 2 doctors for every 100,000

A large part of the book is dedicated towards highlighting the experiences of the patients at PMH and thus provides narratives of various people in the ward. Now, one side of the social experience is due to the compact size of the clinic. In a situation where families are washing dirty wounds, nurses are looking after the relatives in the ward, and beds are lined up close to one another, the setup makes it difficult for patients to ignore the rounds of vomiting after chemotherapy. This environment is made further unbearable with recurring amputations resulting from an inflow of patients with late-stage cancer. Although morphine and codeine are rather inexpensive, they are always in a short supply at PMH, leading Livingston to depict the overlooked issues of pain in Botswana and an overall invisibility of cancer in Africa as it trails the HIV/AIDS epidemic.…

An unusually fragile underclassman: devoid of faith and fearful of a new environment brimming with the cold embrace of the unknown. “What do you like about yourself?” Sitting in the audience, listening to an assembly during my freshman orientation of high school, this existential question hit me like a tidal wave—initially destructive yet ultimately metamorphic. Those around me blessed with a wealth of confidence from a young age beamed with vanity: athletes, scholars, musicians and those exceptionally precocious few with the ability to thrive in multiple environments.…

Marine biology has always been a passion of mine ever since I first heard about it when I was four years old. My family has a deep-running connection to the ocean so when they realized how interested I was in science, they suggested marine biology. I loved the concept of studying unknown creatures that sit miles below the surface of our planet that no human has ever seen. I’ve read many textbooks and field guides over the years, which started as an amusing pastime. However, the more I read, the more I became completely and utterly engrossed in the subject which eventually shaped me into what I am today.…

It is often said that teenagers begin discovering themselves in high school, but I did the opposite- I lost myself. The source of my pleasure and delight shifted from books to parties, writing to boys, and video-games to my social life. Something within me desperately craved to be normal- to no longer be the girl that gets harassed and ostracized for being an “appalling nerd” and because of this, vital aspects of my personality began to change and I morphed into an entirely different person. Through this journey, I learned that my self-hate was a catalyst for self-love and appreciation. Having always been considered an unusual girl in the eyes of my peers, I'd never been truly comfortable in my skin.…

When I was 12 years old, my father was diagnosed with bone cancer. My mom, sister and I spent many hours in hospitals for the first three months of his diagnosis. I was always so thankful for all the hard work and such caring staff members the hospital had. I found myself fascinated in everyone’s role in regards to my father’s care. Anytime someone walked into my father’s hospital room I would read their badge and ask each employee what exactly their role is in the hospital, not because I was questioning their job duties but simply because I wanted to learn more about job opportunities in the hospital.…

I want to become a physician-scientist because I want to work at the interface between basic science research, which has the power to elucidate new knowledge, and clinical medicine, which has the ability to translate scientific discoveries to a deliverable form that can directly help the patients in need. For three years, I studied the role of tumor microenvironment on breast cancer metastasis in Dr. Semenza’s laboratory at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. As I studied the role of Hypoxia-inducible factor on integrin expression and subsequent cell motility, I learnt that cancer is a multi-faceted disease that consists of a web of multiple biological mechanisms as well as other arenas of science. Having exposed myself to…
