I love meeting new people. I love traveling and experiencing new places. Learning about different ways of life and how people are connected to each other in the world makes me feel alive and involved in a unique way that transcends geography.
I also love biology. Over my school years, biology is the academic subject that I’ve been most drawn to because it fascinates and encourages -me to challenge my mind to think in new ways. Additionally, oddly enough, biology connects my love of science with my love of the world around me.
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines biology as the “science of things that are alive.” However, beyond a dictionary or science textbook, the word biology means so much more. Biology is the key to understanding the world around us, the people around us and even ourselves. It is a subject that extends far beyond the walls of a classroom and encapsulates the things in my life that have inspired and motivated me. That is the biology I love.
However, it wasn’t until my family moved to London, England, when I was starting 7th grade, that the random bits of my life began to draw together. The oncology center is no bigger than a small classroom, and, this morning, there were mice scurrying around on the floor when we walked in for rounds. Today, I helped prepare the cancer patients for their treatment and assisted the pathologist in performing fine needle aspirations on several patients in order to get cell samples of their tumors. In the afternoon I helped to organize and compartmentalize each patient’s clinical records, as there are no electronic files like we have in the United States. Did you know that in Malawi, there are only 2 doctors for every 100,000
