My first love is and will always be science. One of my favorite pass times is to peruse the Internet and whatever journals I have available to me to read up on the latest scientific discoveries. My father and I are forever sending articles back and forth via e-mail for discussion!

I love photography, and over the last 3 years it has developed into quite the fun diversion from life in general. Though I don’t have as much time to get out and photograph nature as much as I’d like, looking through my old photos provide me with a sense of calm and enjoyment.

I run a learning center right now, and sometimes when everything gets to be just too much, I’ll have my assistant answer the office phone and I’ll go out into the learning center and teach. Even for only half an hour, it brings such joy to my day! I love the light in a child’s eyes when understanding takes a foothold and a previously difficult concept suddenly makes sense. It’s odd to think of work as “fun”, but that façade

My love of music continues to grow with me as I explore more complex pieces and composers both to sing and to listen to. While I love classical music with an unequaled passion, I enjoy several other types of music as well. My love of music ties strongly into my love of theatre and I can often be found lurking in the cheap seats of Broadway shows that tour through Orlando, or in the chorus of a community performance troupe! Music is my one true escape. There is music in absolutely everything I do. From the humming that I do alone in my office, to the rhythmic typing on the keyboard as I write these responses to the beating of my heart, music is everywhere. I have long been fascinated with the interplay between the human mind and the brain, and have just recently picked up a book “This is Your Brain on Music”, which explores the effect music, has on the human

Music hath charms to soothe the savage beast,” said William Congreve in The Mourning Bride. If the captivating melody could easily take the edge off of the most atrocious monster, then, what are other significant impacts of euphonic sounds for the society? Many are gradually acknowledging the underlying implications of harmonies to their percipience, as seen in the ironical case of Ludwig van Beethoven. The composer of some of the most celebrated music history, such as Moonlight Sonata and Fidelio, spends most of his career going deaf. According to Farahani and his colleagues, the auditory system interconnects closely to the neurological system because the vibrations of the hair cells and the eardrum that send to the brain; so, an individual comprehends the meaning of the sounds (Farahani et al.)…

What am I good at is a question to ponder, however, the first think that comes to my mind is a talent that I work towards improving, golf. Every day I work towards improvement and when I think about it I also see it as my passion. In this case I think that both the mind and the heart overlap. While I am good at it because it challenges me it also forces me into uncomfortable positions. Many would think that they wouldn’t want to do something that isn’t easy and a breeze but that is where the passion comes for the game, because it isn’t something that I have a lot of experience in other sports.…

Music is a fundamental part of my being and has always been in my life. Remembering songs my grandparents sang to me such as “You are my Sunshine” or recalling stories my mother would tell about me, like the time I performed for a whole restaurant at the age of three are alway the first memories to be dug out of my mind. There is a warmth and fondness I feel every time I think of them. The link to all of these memories are music. Before joining the JBHS choir…

However, every child learns differently, and it has been proven that having music helps promote brain function. Most people fail to realize that music can be incorporated into other study subjects. Writers Dimitria Kokotsaki and Susan Hallam worked together to create an academic journal titled “The Perceived Benefits of Music Making for Non-Music University Students: A Comparison with Music Students” claims “There is increasing evidence of the impact of active engagement with music on reading and the phonemic awareness and spelling abilities of dyslexic children improved with rhythm-based instruction. Music lessons can also improve performance in mathematics and there have been studies showing relationships between music instruction and verbal memory and enhanced auditory and audiovisual processing of speech and music” (150).…

As a musician, my performance career has been filled with failing at varying moments. Music is unique and in some ways, can be compared to the realm of medicine. For instance, each requires 100% accuracy, and each is vastly competitive. So competitive is the field of music that one of my greatest failures stems from it. With week after week of playing, my hands were cramped constantly from the awkward position of holding the French horn.…

The heat from the stage lights, the watchful gazes of the audience, and the sweat dripping off of our faces as we struggle to remember our lines, these sensations of being on stage are what caused the performing arts to become not only an activity, but also a passion and an unexpected source of personal growth. Through my experiences in drama and music I have been able to discover my own meaning of fulfillment and define who the person behind my appearance truly is. My passion in the performing arts started when I was a young child first learning to play the violin. Picking up the violin at the age of 6, I became stuck on one of the most basic songs for almost a whole year. At that time no one believed that I could play the violin, my teacher thought that I was too hyperactive and even my mom attempted to convince me to quit.…

I first gained an interest in music in elementary school music class. After playing recorders and learning about the history of music, I was inspired to learn as many different instruments as possible. I began piano lessons in third grade, and started learning cornet a year later. After many years of attending music camps, playing in school and church bands, joining marching band and drumline, and experimenting on my own, I have grown immensely as a musician. My main instruments are trumpet/cornet, piano, marimba, and ukulele.…

Music has been a part of people’s everyday lives for so long. It even evolved in a lot of different ways, then again, not everyone knows how much it actually affects the human mind and body. It doesn’t just make us sing along when we hear some of our favorite songs, it doesn’t just make us dance and groove, but it also has amazing scientific and medical effects. According to neuroscientist and author of This Is Your Brain on Music, Dr. Daniel J. Levitin, when people try to understand what exactly is the meaning of music and where it actually came from, people could have a better understanding on how it affects their motive, desires, memories, fears, and even communication. “Is music listening more along the lines of eating when you’re hungry, and thus satisfying an urge?…
