College Admissions Essay: My Goals At Georgetown University

Improved Essays
As a child I can remember making lists of what I wanted to be or accomplish when I grew up. Then, the list probably consisted various items including becoming a pop star, owning 30 dogs and eating ice cream for breakfast. Now as a senior in High School, my list of goals has drastically changed and helped to guide me through the college process. Quickly, I realized that my goals parallel many of the Jesuit values that Georgetown University exemplifies. It was after two service trips to West Virginia, tutoring underprivileged children once a week, and being part of my school’s Community Service Corp’s that I realized just how integral a part of service is to who I am. Service is not a one-way street, but rather it is about literally helping others …show more content…
While at the same time, Georgetown can help me examine my defects and find a way to use them to my advantage. “Cura Personalis” reminds me that without my acknowledging my flaws and letting people help to improve them, I would not the best person I could be. My Dad, Georgetown University alumni, has a shirt with “Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam” inscribed on the back of it. A.M.D.G is not only the one thing my dad says I am allowed to get tattooed on my body, but, more importantly, it is a Jesuit saying which means, “For the Greater Glory of God”. There are over fifty Catholic organizations in Brookland, and The Catholic University of America itself is stretched across one hundred and seventy-six acres of land adjacent to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, the largest Catholic church in North America. It has been visited by Popes John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and Francis. The shrine’s Spiritual Director Fr. Raymond Lebrun knows a lot about the goings-on in the neighborhood and how the church has continued its outreach efforts despite all the recent real-estate developments around the basilica. And if you look just across the street from the basilica, you’ll likely spot a couple of young friars discussing theological doctrine on the steps of the Dominican House of Studies.…

As my time at Rockhurst comes to a close, I have realized that the most important lessons that I have learned has been how to be a well-rounded young man. Since my first day, I have heard that the charge of the Jesuit schools, going back to St. Ignatius of Loyola, is to create “men and women for others” and to instill the ideals of the “grad at grad” repeated countless times. While I did not know what those sayings meant at the time, I now know that Rockhurst has prepared me to be a leader and young man as I start the next chapter of my life. Being a man for others means that I need to put the needs of others and the community in front of my own in context with the five characteristics of the grad at grad.…

Shorter University fosters the opportunity to receive a Christ-centered education while allowing students to remain focused on pursuing their relationship with God. As an exuberant high-school senior, I reside with my mother, younger sister, and my troublesome pet cat, Cally, and I enjoy working part-time at Marco’s Pizza. My arduous pursuits consist of playing the clarinet, writing poetry, learning the art of the French language, and volunteering throughout the community. Apart from earning a degree in accounting at Shorter University, my personal goals, that I will accomplish by graduation, range not only - from harnessing a deeper relationship with God as I continue to fulfill his call to share the gospel - but also, to developing new, yet immutable friendships, while cultivating my greatest contribution: my desire to publish my writing to glorify God.…
