I am a first-generation college student in my family and I want to show my parents and the rest of my family that I can go to college. So I have used a few different programs and some were outside of high school. Over the summer of my junior and senior year, I did a SAT Prep Program called SWAG (Students With Academic Goals) and this helped bring my SAT score up and I learned more about college like the application process, tuition, housing, etc. I also did a different SAT program with Cal-Soap in the summer of my junior year which helped a lot as well. I believe my grades in high school reflect my academic ability because I work hard for those grades.…

As a child, one of the most important questions that is asked is, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” My response is a little bit stumbling, but it’s very concise, “I want to be an Underwriter, that is majoring in Risk Management and Insurance.” This has always been something that I wanted to set my goal as, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison has a great Risk Management and Insurance degree program that can help me reach my goal. They have over 4,700 academic courses, which actually surprises me because I have a variety of different opportunities that I can choose from. In addition, Madison is known for having excellent athletic teams, which is very impressive, and excludes other colleges.…

All through my summer, I never felt at peace unless I was wrist-deep in dough. My worries would disappear when I closed the oven door and soon enough my motto became “stressed backwards is desserts.” For a while, I genuinely thought that I had a baking addiction. Ratios in recipes and conversions from cups to deciliters were ingrained into my head like my own name. That is until, one day, I bit into a vanilla and coffee cupcake and tasted only unexpected discontent.…

From my position at the podium, in front of many critical eyes, I was sure that my heartbeat was audible to every set of ears in the classroom. My fingers trembled uncontrollably and while doing so, unknowingly crumpled the sheet of paper that was held between them. In that moment, I was hyperaware of everything that was happening around me. Every blink, every cough, even the constant ticking of the clock at the back of the room made me more uneasy than I already was. I waited patiently, as patiently as I ever had in my life, for the “Go” from my teacher.…

The image of my mom walking away after the farewell ceremony is forever engraved into my mind. Her face red from crying—as was mine— as she was one of the last parents to leave as we both attempted to prolong her departure. I knew I would see her the following weekend, but I had never been away from my mom for more than three nights and I was about to spend a whole week, six nights, apart from her. This is how my college experience began. College has proven to be life changing compared to high school as I am no longer in the comfort of my home and in the presence of my mom; I have also had to adjust to changes in the time I spend in class and studying, and had the pleasure of becoming acquainted with resident assistants whom I can confide…
