As I sit on a colorful kindergarten rug surrounded by several children my age, I glance around as I soak in the reality of our first day of school. Unaware of our ethnicities, we are brought together to strive for excellence, obtain a better life than our parents, and to make a difference in this world. As the years pass by, one begins to acknowledge the diversity we are surrounded with in school and the upbringing most had to face to one day allow us to achieve the goals set to our standards.
At a juvenile age, I was educated with the tools required to succeed towards acquiring a job suited to meet my hobbies and personality; which is obtaining a baccalaureate degree. After obtaining a structured education, I would be able to attain a stable means of income, my dream home, and one day, create a family of my own. As high school graduation came closer the obstacles of life began to manifest before me. College seemed nearly impossible to attend since I had no means to pay for tuition. My parents were facing a financial burden, so it was up to me to let the economic burden overcome me or simply take the bull by the horns. `

However, there were months in which there was economic struggles that made us learn to value things when they are fruitful. Despite facing various monetary hardships throughout my upbringing, this made me strive for more in life. This meant not setting low standards in my education, my future goals in life, and helping those around me to the best of my abilities. A messy bedroom, Arctic Monkeys as background music, and an adolescent begrudgingly writing an essay for their twelfth grade English class is the current scene. This is the perspective of a senior; an absolutely glamorous time in life. It's an alarming thought that my high school career has brought me to this point as I search my mind for the correct words to advise you and my fingers tap away at my small keyboard. I'm supposed to give advice and guidance to the future graduates of our beloved Quincy High School, but there's little I can give that can be completely relatable to all. For example, I was raised by a single father, am a part-time cashier, and can barely figure out how the Pythagorean theorem will actually affect my adult life.…

Ever since I was a kid, I knew one thing: I wanted to be successful, I wanted to be someone important. Some days, this vision was the only escape I had from a severely broken home. I spent my early years taking care of my baby brother, something my mother couldn’t do, due to her severe bipolar- schizophrenic mental problems. My dad was to sick to do much of anything; at only seven years old I was taking care of a kid and going to school. I had to mature pretty quickly in order for my family to survive.…

It was always my mother’s dream to have all of my brothers go to college, but only one of them were able to enter at Chabot. Unfortunately, my brother had to drop out of college because of the money issue we had, where rent had become the first priority to our family. Seeing this happen to my brother, made me feel concerned about the future, and also envision what could be stored in mine. The fact that my brother was the first to enter college in my family though, was a big inspiration. This made me recognize that I shouldn’t take my education for granted because not all is given the opportunity.…

In this portfolio, included is my final revised personal narrative essay entitled “My savior and Lighted Path,” my first graded draft of this essay, and my letter of Final Essay Reflection. The “My savior and Lighted Path” paper contains the reasons as to why I am college and why school is so significant to me. In this essay, I speak about my life growing up with a poor, sickly mother in a poor neighborhood where my mother had abusive boyfriends to help pay her medical bills and finances. I go on to discuss that my divorced parents both struggle with money due to dropping out of high school and not attending college. I carry the reader through my story of how my mother, my sisters, and I all struggled in life until my mother met my step dad who was extremely wealthy because…

Singing in Swahili was weird at first, but now it is as natural to me as cringing at one of my dad’s bad puns. With ten years’ experience in VOENA, an internationally recognized youth choir, I can sing in over thirty languages from around the world. Growing up in VOENA taught me, not only how to sing and perform, but how to appreciate foreign cultures and different language. This appreciation has shaped who I am as a person and what I dream of and strive for.…

If someone told me a year ago that I would have the post-graduate job I currently hold today, I would have probably laughed. I am a habilitation technician, which is essentially a fancy title for an aid that assists children and young adults with special needs. Like many people, I grew up feeling a twinge uncomfortable in the presence of disabled individuals—not because I looked down upon or disliked them, but simply because I feared acting awkwardly or saying the wrong thing around them. When I applied for the job during my senior year of college, I figured it would be a glorified babysitting position; instead, I found myself facing one challenge after another: communication barriers (many autistic children are nonverbal), behavioral adversities (aggressive episodes where I was punched and kicked), and extremely slow progress in terms of skill development.…

If you asked me to pick a moment in time, a pinnacle decision in which my future hinged on the real progress of “what could be;” when and where would I go? Would it be to go back to my first semester of college littered with bad choices and worse decisions? My life has been a serving platter of failures, sincerely, pick any one of my past’s Hors D’oeuvres and you’ll taste an experience traversing your taste-buds through a multitude of flavors: grainy, sweet, vinegary, or just, plain.…

In December, shortly after I ran my first marathon, my best friend gave me a necklace with a running shoe pendant. He knew that running a marathon before I turned eighteen had been a goal of mine for a long time, and that I had put in countless hours of training for months to reach my goal. Today, I wear the necklace as a reminder of my accomplishment, and to push myself to be better not only in my running, but in my everyday life. Now that the track season has started, my necklace provides me with motivation during intense workouts. The soft bounce of the pendant against my chest tells me that if I ran a marathon at the age of seventeen, I can persevere through one workout.…
