College Admissions Essay: My Experience Of Living In Montana

One year ago, I moved to a tiny community in northeastern Montana. It’s not what most people picture when they picture Montana. I am not surrounded by mountains and pine trees, but rather high rolling plains, oil rigs, and cattle ranches. It is a far cry from the Midwest where I grew up. It is even a farther cry from the South American jungle where I lived and taught for the six years prior to living here. But my experiences living in a variety of places have taught me to enjoy the journey. After all, you never know how long you will spend in a particular place, and each place has something unique or special to teach to us. So, after surviving my first Montana winter, I decided to dive head first into the life and culture of my new community. I was invited to some cattle brandings and I decided to try out the life of a cowgirl, at least a pseudo-cowgirl ☺. Let’s just say I have a lot to learn. And in the same way that living in Montana surrounded by ranchers is the perfect place to learn about ranch life, the MAET program has been an incredible place to learn about ways in which I can teach with and through technology. I have been surrounded by experts in the field and fellow learners on their own journeys. But most importantly, I have connected with people who will continue to challenge me to improve and grow within my field. Now, the idea of colleagues extends beyond the brick and mortar school where I work. I follow a number of education and instructional technology blogs. I actively scan my Twitter feed for posts relating to my field. And I connect with my MAET classmates through Facebook. I really do have a wealth of expertise at my fingertips. As part of my continuing journey, I plan to maintain the connections I have made with a world of colleagues and field
