Even as a first-generation American, I was raised with the values my parents were raised with in Jamaica. They instilled the value of knowledge in me from a young age and made sure I knew that my education as a young child would set the stage for the rest of my life. Instead of making school a dreadful, compulsory task that I felt forced to complete, my parents fostered a love of learning in me. They encouraged curiosity and rewarded my success without making me feel as if my grades were the only important thing about my educational experience. As a result, I did not feel pressured to only care about grades and I cared more about learning the material and increasing my understanding of topics that I was interested in.

Although the career field I have chosen is extremely small and competitive, I was never discouraged by my family or mentors or forced to choose another field of study. This constant encouragement has inspired me to go after my dreams, no matter how scarce the opportunities are. The curiosity, dedication and confidence instilled in me continue to motivate me to realize my potential.
