Transitioning from a small catholic elementary school with roughly sixty peers in my graduating class to Hudson High School was a shock. For the first time in my life I was surrounded by hundreds of unfamiliar faces, many of which looked nothing like mine. At first it was extremely easy for me to fall into the stereotypes of a large public school- categorizing my peers as populars, loners, jocks, and nerds. It was in having personal relationships with people from these different social groups that I discovered that the differences between us were minuscule.…

In the 8th grade, my peer group expanded to a crowd of classmates, of a minimum of 15-20 students at any given time. During this time, I saw myself beginning to develop a sense of self, and starting to take on positive qualities of the other people around me. Around this time my relationship with school began to change because as my peer group excelled academically, I did not, but I slowly began to see myself make strides in do better, but I still felt my special education inhibited me from improving (Broderick & Blewitt , The Life Span p. 371). I walked through the hallways of my middle school, listening to the garbled conversations around me. I wondered why people were only “together” one day, what this new term, gay, meant, and why OneDirection was so important. Awkward silences, gasps of disbelief, and grudging explanations often followed my inevitable queries of “What does that mean?” I had difficulty understanding how people interacted at first, and found myself listening from the outside to learn different things for later use. I still struggle with the fact that socialization is just as important as homework, for it has only been in the last two years I have built up the confidence to feel accepted, and put school to the side so that I don’t become a hermit.…
