College Admissions Essay: Living In Mexico

Improved Essays
Living in Mexico for most of my childhood was a wonderful experience. The place was beautiful, the food was great, and being so close to my entire family, a family of at least 50 people, gave me some the of the best memories I could ever ask for. My dad worked in the U.S pretty much all day, everyday, and sent money over for, my brother, my mother, and for myself in Mexico, so that we could support ourselves. We figured that because I have U.S citizenship I would be able to take full advantage of it, follow my dreams, and have a great career. As the years passed I kept making plenty of new friends, making honor roll and becoming a straight A student all throughout Grammar School and Middle School. Also, during Middle School I was part of the YMCA Youth Institute, which improved my social skills as well as giving me new skills on computer based programs, especifically the Adobe programs and FInal Cut Pro. At this point of my life I had already been exposed, for years, to the culture of the U.S and knew exactly how to become successful here, by continuing to study and go to college. This is why when I started high school, I didn’t slow down and continued to give it my best. I kept getting straight A’s, except for some B’s in tough science classes, but I managed. I became captain of the soccer team, my junior year, and as a result I was able to attend RYLA 2016, which taught me many life lessons that I will never forget and use in the future to succeed. I will be the first one in my family to go to a university and just that thought motivates me to not stop no matter how hard it gets, because in the end it will all be worth

Being Mexican American I believed I had a bit of an unfair advantage taking this course. I was looking forward to learning more about my culture and myself but at the back of my mind I believed I would already know some of the material. I am very happy to say that I have learned a lot more than I expected. I have learned a lot about Hispanic cultures other than mine, politics, and economics, and many other topics but off all the things we covered in class the three that most stuck out to me were the early history of Latinos in the US, learning about privilege, and educational achievement of Latinos.…

One of the major problems in the U.S. is immigration. Every year, thousands of immigrants flock to this country. Some immigrants are trying to escape religious and political oppression, while others are seeking the “American Dream.” Non-English workers will work for lower wages, suggesting that they may take jobs from Americans. Immigrants may receive benefits such as welfare and healthcare, but the strong U.S. economy they help create can offset this.…
