College Admissions Essay: Individual Growth And Training Wheels

I believe individual growth is not easy; rather, time and discipline are essential. These experiences will not always l be comfortable or even pleasurable. However, persistence verifies a person’s innate will to succeed. Even when these certain experiences cause an individual to fall, one must choose whether or not an individual will persevere. Through the course of life, particular situations will challenge one’s faith and develop one’s self. When I was about five, I wanted to learn how to ride a bicycle without my training wheels. Each day, I would hop onto my seat thinking today would be the day. But I would soon resort back to the consolation of keeping my training wheels— I wanted to be prepared just in case I lost my balance. What I fall and I would have to walk all the way home? What if no one is there to catch me when I tip over? What if I embarrass myself in front of the neighborhood kids? My friends would speed past me on their spiffy bikes while I lagged behind with my training wheels striking every bump, making for a rough ride. Finally, I knew it was time to face the inevitable fact that my safety wheels needed to go. As my dad removed the screws of my training wheels, I felt the tingle in my stomach and questioned whether or not I made the right decision. This bike-ride of life also demands persistence. As I continue on, replacing skinned knees with the handlebars of school, the essential ingredients of individual growth remain. Taking the risks in life with no training wheels is a true test of one’s faith in God and themselves. With each challenge in my academic career, I have learned that the only way to balance this ride of life requires one to be faithful to one’s goals and allow God to take time so He may do His work in one’s
