College Admissions Essay: How Volunteer Work Changed My Life

Improved Essays
A few months ago, I had a very candid conversation with my dad. He sat me down and we talked about my future, my plans for college and beyond and how he can help me achieve those goals. My plan for the time being was to get my generals done here at LSC and hopefully by then know what I want to do for a career so I can choose a college and a degree that suites me. After that my father expected a very familiar tale. The one where you get a job you love, a family you love more, to retire early and travel often. But I don’t think that’s me I mean sure all of that sounds fine and dandy but I’ve always wanted something more in life, I’ve always wanted to make some sort of meaningful impact on the world and leave an impression. I’ve come to conclude that I’m not going to be famous, I can’t act, …show more content…
I think the ones that everyone always talks about are hard work and determination. Those ones are the obvious ones, but I believe it doesn’t just require hard work, but it also requires smart work, doing things that will help further me in whatever field it is I eventually decide to go into and not just wasting my time doing work that won’t help further myself. Also, I believe starting to help people now through volunteer work is an important aspect. I first got into volunteer work through boy scouts when I was a member of the scouts and I still volunteer occasionally but nearly to the extent that I did during my scouting days. This on top of giving you a good feeling, and looking good on a resume helps you make connections in our community that otherwise would not be there. Lastly, I am going to need a fair amount of luck to achieve this very lucid and ever changing end goal. I’m going to need to get lucky with finding the right college after LSC, meeting the right people and eventually finding the right job. With this being out of my control it will be the one I focus the least on, but still a very important part of the

Kindness has become a foreign language, one I make an effort to practice everyday. I work in a coffee shop, which requires a tremendous about of patience, as well as hospitality and customer service. According to Bourdieu, habitus is what determines the way we perceive or judge society’s actions based on how the world structures social worlds. The way in which we grow up forms our experiences and judgement.1 In today’s society, success and failure are determined based on a person’s education, economic, and class status. Therefore, it can be concluded that in a household, the more you accomplish, the more likely you will be seen as successful and accepted into society. Throughout my memo, I will be explaining how doxa was affected in my disruption by the beliefs each individual involved has, and the effect of both habitus and doxa.…

I am willing to bet that there are many astonishing young men and women who have applied for this scholarship. I am also willing to bet there are a fair amount of applicants who meet the unwritten standards needed to receive this scholarship. I will not boast promises of outstanding grades or how this money could build my future. Instead, I will tell of my past, allowing my personality speak for itself. Growing up my parents always encouraged my siblings and me to stay true to ourselves, whether that is morally, mentally, and/or physically.…

I have been volunteering at my local library ever since my high school career has begun. Over the summer, I motivate little kids to read: I convince them to comprehend the various stories read, and in return they are rewarded with various prizes. During the weekends, I assist children with the material they may be struggling with in school. Every now and then, a few kids would bring in their homework, while others brought in either textbooks or their notes.…

As there is a vacant position within the program, and I have a burning passion for providing counseling and guidance to those in need of it, I would be grateful if you were to grant me an interview. As a fickle and undecided graduating senior myself, I have also researched the many varying paths one could choose to travel after high school, including, but not limited to, college, trade school, military, and immediate workforce options.…

The bed mercilessly taunts my exhausted limbs to return but my determined heart persuades me to brave the trial by water once more. As I dive over the ice cold pool, dread and regret fill every moment until my body finally makes contact. For two, sometimes three, hours the situation will only worsen as I repeatedly raise my arms above my head and pull back as hard as possible. Weeks of this pass by, all for the sake of being able to travel through 100 meters of water a few milliseconds faster. Swimming has been my primary sport since the age of eight.…

For twenty years of my life, I have never done any volunteer activities for the soceity. Although I have donated money to some of the organisations, I have never joined any activities physically. As in the class Social Ethic: Phil 123C we discussed at the beginning of the semester about “you” and “me”, I always think in term of “me” instead of thinking for the soceity. I want all my free time after school is only dedicated for myself, even if I just doing nothing for a whole day. When I take the class Social Ethic: Phil 123C I see an opportunity for me to contribute my work for the soceity where I am living in now because it is also required by Suffolk University before my graduation.…
