College Admissions Essay: How Artwork Changed My Life

I have a fear that tends to stand out from other fears, one that is fairly unconventional. I believe that everyone has this fear at some time in their lives. I am afraid of being average, and falling under my own expectations. I come from, humble circumstances and people don’t expect much from me in terms of succeeding. All through elementary and junior high, I didn’t much to be excited for. I didn’t have any urge to do well in school and I didn’t try my hardest because I didn’t have a passion for school. If I had stayed that way, I don’t know how different my life would be. Everyone had something to be excited about, a hobby they were passionate about. I didn’t have anything I was above average at meaning: I was an under average as a person. I truly believe that high school changed who I was and how I approach life. Art was something I gained a passion for when I started high school. I realized I loved improving myself in the practice of portrait drawing. …show more content…
I had always been slightly interested in drawing and did well at the arts and crafts projects we did. But I didn’t think I had possessed the talent for high caliber oil portraits earlier: because “raw” talent doesn’t exist. Talent comes only from hard work, and persistence, and believing talent is something we’re only born with is an excuse that people use to justify why they don’t have that certain talent. That’s why my “talent” is the reason I get straight A’s, do well on tests, and love to challenge myself academically. Now, I enjoy school and I see that nothing is impossible for me no matter how much people tell me I can’t. My dreams aren’t limited by financial issues my family goes through, or coming from a single parent home. My success is limited only by me and how hard I am willing to work. My hope of becoming a successful neurologist is decided by me and that mindset came from

Since a very young age, art has always been one of my major interests. I found joy in getting my hands messy with the paint and then transforming a white piece of paper into a something more than that with a rainbow of colors. In school, I always made sure to take all the possible art classes that were available and would fit my schedule. I also began to get more in involved in after school clubs such as the National Art Honor Society and the SmART Club where we did several art projects every week. On my last year of high school I decided to challenge myself and I took AP Studio Art: Drawing Portfolio.…

I found that those fears clearly outline the major problems of mine because I used to let fear controls over myself; and fear also stops me from moving forward. My biggest fear is the fear of what other people expect because I found that I am not that great and I need more but I could not find the right way to do so. I also have fear of watching other people success.…

College is a life changing investment that prepares for life and career. The vast spectrum of knowledge, skills obtained, and experiences from a college degree more than compensates for the monetary cost of tuition. Creating art is my passion; I have always wanted to become a great artist ever since I was a child drawing on my walls and copying pictures from books. I have devoted my life to improving my talents by illustrating my own stories, practicing drawing daily, and challenging myself to earning my own money doing what I love by drawing commissions. Learning how to communicate through illustration is a valuable skill that will live with me for the rest of my life and progressing my artist career.…

As high school progressed, so did my GPA and the rigor of the courses I was taking. I set aside what I could not control and focused on what I could. With the help of some incredible teachers, my passion for science blossomed and my drive to get good grades, take challenging courses, and explore my passion for science grew. It was an honest passion interest and love for learning, not something forced upon me by my parents or my school. I think for many high school students their schedule and classes become something that will make their parents happy or look good on college transcripts, but it is something so much more for me.…

Throughout my life there has been a greater emphasis on music and artistic talents rather than on physical attributes. I am not athletically inclined in the slightest, but music comes naturally and a love for it grew from my first and only piano teacher. She threw me my most secure life line when I was seven years old. My parents bought a heavy, ancient and well-used upright piano from one of our neighbors many years ago. It was almost mesmerizing to have a piano at my house and not just my grandparents.…

Although, many try to conquer it over time and succeed in doing so. My major fears are of heights, public speaking, and failure. According to the text Living with Art by Mark Getlein, there are six primary roles that artists fulfill in society: artists “create places for some human purpose” (i.e. monolithic art as Stonehenge, Gobeki Tepe, churches, etc..), artist “create extra-ordinary versions of ordinary objects” (for instance the World’s largest ball of yarn, or Tintoretto’s Last Supper), artists have been used to “record and commemorate” historical events (such as a wedding photographer or Pablo Picasso’s Guernica depicting the carnage of the civil war of Spain), artists give “tangible form to the unknown” (for instance the abstract and cubist movements of the 20th century, or the design of man-made objects), artists “give tangible form to feelings and ideas” ( works…
