College Admissions Essay: How Art Has Changed My Life

Decent Essays
Art has always been my passion; Music, dance, drama, anything. For me, it was always an outlet to express myself in this world without the fear of judgement from others. It's amazing to me though that I could get myself to do anything (like singing, acting, sewing, etc) and it just always stuck to me since then. Basically, anything within art was always something that I truly enjoyed.

But drawing has always my main thing that I've wanted to pursue. Since I was about 3, I've been creating art for a while; It was a hobby at first and just something that I'd do whether I was bored or if I had an idea in mind. One day when I was about 6 I realized that this was something that I'd want to do for a living. Another thing to is that the arts has always ran strong within my family, and I still want to make that stronger in the future. I went to visit my Aunt one day with my father, stepmother, and stepsiblings; We were all really just discussing about my future and such. Then I had this uncle of mine who's always in a bad mood asked me "What do I want to be when I get older?". I told himself that I wanted to be an artist, and he immediately said that I was never going to make any money in that career and that I'd end up broke. Hearing that from a family member really disappointed me inside, and for a while I was unsure whether I should keep pursuing the

Throughout my life there has been a greater emphasis on music and artistic talents rather than on physical attributes. I am not athletically inclined in the slightest, but music comes naturally and a love for it grew from my first and only piano teacher. She threw me my most secure life line when I was seven years old. My parents bought a heavy, ancient and well-used upright piano from one of our neighbors many years ago. It was almost mesmerizing to have a piano at my house and not just my grandparents.…

Two summers ago, I experienced an epiphany in the Contarelli Chapel in the Church of San Luigi dei Francesi in Rome. While I am certainly not the first to have had a revelatory experience there, mine was not of the religious kind. Rather, mine was the illuminating realization that my path leads where my dual and symbiotic passions for history and art have been inexorably guiding me my entire young life. I have long been fascinated by the past and drawn to museums and other repositories of the past. The first time I breathed the chill conditioned air of the American Museum of Natural History, my father had to lift me on his shoulders to give me an unobstructed view of the fossil remains of a triceratops.…

I think my interest in art came from watching my granddad and step dad painting amazing landscapes. I’d be mesmerised by the process. I started drawing when I was 9 but during high school I gave it up. I didn’t realise it at the time, but art was my main source of releasing emotions as I wasn’t a very verbal child. After I stopped drawing I became very isolated socially and developed depression.…

Drawing and designing are my hobbies since I was young and I have been interested in any forms of art since then. I am continuously learning the other forms of art and accepting the new challenges of learning another angle of it because I want to know what and where I am good at and what could be my possible weakness that can help me to improve myself in the future. There are lots of cases where people are not born to be creative and artistic, and I was one of them. According to the text Living with Art by Mark Getlein, there are six primary roles that artists fulfill in society: artists “create places for some human purpose” (i.e. monolithic art as Stonehenge, Gobeki Tepe, churches, etc..), artist “create extra-ordinary versions of ordinary objects” (for instance the World’s largest ball of yarn, or Tintoretto’s Last Supper), artists have been used to “record and commemorate” historical events (such as a wedding photographer or Pablo Picasso’s Guernica depicting the carnage of the civil war of Spain), artists give “tangible form to the unknown” (for instance the abstract and cubist movements of the 20th century, or the design of man-made objects), artists “give tangible form to feelings and ideas” ( works…
