I am proud of my Mexican American heritage and the community I grew up in. My mom was always working and I would spend most of my time with my grandparents. My grandpa knew what is was like to grow up without an education and did his best to put me through school. I would spend hot afternoons and late nights doing homework and reading. Though I wanted to make him proud, I was driven more by my fascination with literature and urge to learn more about the world. When my grandpa wasn’t helping me study, my grandma would cook delicious food, tell me about her childhood, and watch Novellas with me. When my mom enrolled me in a Catholic high school, I was surprised that most of my classmates came from a similar Hispanic background. But the diversity of my school’s population was only a small part of what made my high school unique. My school was founded by the Salesian Order and strived to create a nurturing environment educate future leaders in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). …show more content…
For example, for some my English assignments, I needed to design and build a model windmill, design a child safety product, grow sunflowers, and write essays about how each project related to the books we were reading in class. Though I did not initially understand the purpose of these assignments, I realized that my English teacher wanted us to be more creative and related English to what we were learning in our Science and Engineering classes. While working on these projects, I worked in groups and learned the value of teamwork and collaboration.
