College Admissions Essay: Going Away To College

Growing up, I never expected to have the opportunity to go away to college. I thought I would have no other choice but to attend a community school. Not that there is anything wrong with community college, but my family just did not have the money to send me anywhere else. Although my parents have always supported me in anything I’ve ever done, they never really pushed me to focus on my future. They probably don’t even know what FAFSA is. They were never too concerned as long as I stayed in school and passed my classes. I guess they just assumed I would figure the rest of my life out along the way. My parents always said, “as long as you’re receiving an education, where you go shouldn’t matter.” Because of this, I never had a “dream school” like the rest of my friends; it seemed so out of reach. SEMO is located in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, which isn’t too bad of a drive back to Swansea if I ever get homesick on the weekends. I loved the campus and the dorms, and I really felt as if this place could become a second home to me while I receive my education. When talking to the tour guides, I discovered that SEMO offers an impressive nursing program. All of these factors contributed to making SEMO my top choice of schools. I would like to pursue a career in nursing, however I haven’t exactly decided what I would like to do just yet. In order to become a Registered Nurse, I would need a Bachelor’s Degree in Science. It would take just two more years after this to become a Nurse Practitioner and receive my Master’s Degree. The reason I’ve selected nursing as my possible career choice is because I genuinely like helping and caring for people. Nursing is an important major that would be a reliable and practicable career
