Since my childhood, I have been passionate about the sky and stars. I’ve seen the manned exploration of distant planets as something attainable. This motivated me to pursue a career in science and engineering related to space and aviation. Although being born and raised in a rural area in Mexico has made my path to an American college tougher, I never lost sight of my dreams throughout my journey. Lupita Nyong’o once said: “No matter where you're from, your dreams are valid.”
I gained confidence in myself and in my goals after participating in the 2016 XXV Mexican Chemistry Olympics. There I developed the skills necessary to efficiently work under pressure. I was required to learn and master around four to five chapters per day of college-level textbooks. Amid my weakest moments, thoughts of giving up filled my mind; nonetheless, they were overcome by the rewarding sense of victory. I envisioned building a weather balloon with my own funds that would inspire children to dream bigger and persuade my school to have an interest in the organization. After learning how to program it myself, and with the help of my friends and my math teacher, I managed to successfully launch the balloon into space, where it recorded valuable atmospheric data. Therefore, I encouraged hundreds of kids to work for their dreams. Three months later, I graduated with honors as the school’s salutatorian with a special award for being an example for future generations. Consequently, my path was established.
