The gun fires and I’m off.
I didn’t even notice the other runners I was competing against. I blocked everyone out. Focus Maddi. You got this. I remembered my footwork as I approached the first hurdle. Left. Right. Leap! I cleared the first hurdle. 1 down 9 more to go. Left. Right. Leap! I cleared 5 more hurdles and I was in the lead. This race was mine. That trophy would be on my shelf.
The 6th hurdled loomed ahead of me. Left. Right. Leap! But I didn’t clear the 6th hurdle. I felt my back foot catch on the top of the hurdle. Then crash. I knew from the second my body hit the unforgiving track that I had broken something. Except the pain didn’t last long because as my head collided with the track everything went black. No more cheering crowds. Silence.
I sat up in my bed. I was sweating. My heart was racing. My breathing was rapid and my hands were shaking. I had dreamed it. All of it. I let out a sigh of relief, and wiped the sweat from my face. The trophy would be sitting on my shelf tomorrow. I haven’t given up
