Break a Leg Everything is perfect. The cool, spring breeze whipping past my face and through my hair. The warm glow of the sun coming up through the trees. My every step and leap perfectly timed. My clear mind. All of it… perfect. I love my morning runs, it gives me time to think, to dream. I’m Maddi Claire. I run track. Well, specifically hurdles. I’ve enjoyed running my entire life. I love the feeling of exhilaration I get sprinting down the lane and leaping over each hurdle. The rush, the speed, the determination to win, makes me feel alive. Early every morning I have track practice before school and during athletics 1st period. After that, the rest of my day is mostly class. Class and lunch… and then a ton of homework. After school I practice track… again. Most people think I’m crazy for practicing so much, but I have a reason. I am the best and fastest female hurdler on the track team. I clear every hurdle. My steps are perfectly …show more content…
The gun fires and I’m off.
I didn’t even notice the other runners I was competing against. I blocked everyone out. Focus Maddi. You got this. I remembered my footwork as I approached the first hurdle. Left. Right. Leap! I cleared the first hurdle. 1 down 9 more to go. Left. Right. Leap! I cleared 5 more hurdles and I was in the lead. This race was mine. That trophy would be on my shelf.
The 6th hurdled loomed ahead of me. Left. Right. Leap! But I didn’t clear the 6th hurdle. I felt my back foot catch on the top of the hurdle. Then crash. I knew from the second my body hit the unforgiving track that I had broken something. Except the pain didn’t last long because as my head collided with the track everything went black. No more cheering crowds. Silence.
I sat up in my bed. I was sweating. My heart was racing. My breathing was rapid and my hands were shaking. I had dreamed it. All of it. I let out a sigh of relief, and wiped the sweat from my face. The trophy would be sitting on my shelf tomorrow. I haven’t given up

Bang, the gun sounds. I sprint out of my box, following teammates in pursuit of the leader. The pack of cross country runners appears to envelop me from my parent’s sight. I hurdle toward the first flag, passing competitors right and left.
