College Admissions Essay: Community Service In High School

Improved Essays
I have always been a relatively average child. I did not believe that I had any redeeming qualities about myself. Unlike other children my age who wanted to fit in with their peers, I tried my best to be as unique as possible. I wanted to be able to stand out from the crowd. However, I realized that goal was not easy to accomplish.
My high school has a requirement where students have to finish twenty hours of community service within four years. Like every other student at my school, I joined a club in order to get opportunities for community service. After a year of miscellaneous community service for the Recycling Club, I realized that I was not satisfied with the way I was carrying out my high school career. Later I found out that my school offered the “Maroon Cord” for students who completed 150 hours of community service within their high school years. At that point, I felt a small fire slowly igniting within my chest.

I loved to go on adventures into the storybook world. Reading was a way to go on adventures and experience a whole different life without leaving the comfort of home. The Milpitas library became a second home for me. Most of my time was spent at the library. I was very excited to find out that high school students could volunteer at the library. I went applied and went through the whole application process just for me to get rejected on my first try. Although being rejected is a little bit discouraging, I attempted to try again. I got rejected again on my second, third, and fourth tries. At this point I wanted to give up because I did not believe that I could become a volunteer. However, my passion for helping the community urged me to try one last time. On my fifth attempt at applying, I was accepted and became a volunteer for the Milpitas

So why do you think you should be considered to be one of the first to get this program?” “Well, to be honest, you probably have thousands of more interesting people that would look better getting the program. I always felt like everyone had a special talent accept me. Some could paint, act, play sports, but that was never me. I was just a little girl being bullied for having a blanket and sucking my thumb in first grade. Always left out and being told I would never amount to much, took a big toll on my grades. All throughout elementary school I was in the “special” classes.…

Being a member of this distinguished society is what I have strived towards since elementary school. Watching presentations and hearing stories from individuals in high school from a young age (who were at the time active National Honor Society members), inspired the archetype that I aspired to be –the archetype of an individual who shares the four characteristics that National Honor Society stands for: scholarship, service, leadership and character. Throughout my high school career, I worked towards the scholarship aspect. Despite where I am currently, my freshman year had not gone as well as I hoped it would.…

Towards the end of my junior year, I had a total of 35 hours done. It may not seem much compared to others, but during my 35 hours it didn’t even feel like I was volunteering. It felt like I made a huge difference in my community. Many people recognize me as a helper, for this reason I tend to help everyone I can, and this builds character. I’ve learned people, who…

Throughout the majority of my life, I was self-conscious and constantly worried about how I was perceived by others. As a child, I had always felt slightly out of place among my peers. I was just a little too quirky to fit into any of the groups at my school and I was too shy to force my way into one. I could not exactly understand what made me so different from my classmates and I desired more than anything to gain the self-confidence to express myself.…

Just a few years ago, my dad would always tell me stories about when he turned 18 years old. He would tell me that in the near future I would have to start paying taxes, sign up for the selective service, and have to learn how to cooperate with everyone in the work field that I wish to pursue. I think to myself “How will continuing my education prepare me to discharge my civic duty to my community and my country?” I have experienced myself going through different stages in my life. Once I head off to college, many new opportunities will open up to me.…

The Big Day As I sat there waiting for my results, surrounded by friends but feeling so alone, I pondered at all the possibilities "maybe I qualified for state or maybe I didn't" I kept thinking. I could hear the blasting of horns and the beating of drums in the distance, strangely though I was surrounded by sound and vibrations I still managed to tune it out. For some reason to me sitting in that one seat became almost my own little bubble filled with self doubt while at the same time a shred of hope. It felt like chaos and anarchy reigned in my head, hope battling doubt, until I saw a judge post results on to a wall; my bubble popped, and slowly I approached the results. Going into my junior year of high school I had only one goal; to become the best Euphonium player and prove all the people who ever doubted me wrong.…

Essay I am grateful for this opportunity to apply for the Viola B. Wilson Endowed Scholarship and the John S. Staley Memorial Fund scholarships. Scholarship opportunities have been of particular importance to me; I paid for my undergraduate education primarily on my own and will be paying for my graduate schooling on my own as well. While I am asking for financial help, my work ethic and commitment to education are a strong part of who I am. Growing up, it was my responsibility to pay for things that I wanted, and my parents provided me with work opportunities around the house to earn the money.…

April 15, 2014, just months after my 16th birthday, was not only the one year anniversary of our house fire, but also a day of rejoice for my family, friends, and myself. This day was the crowning point of my scouting career. I remember standing in the lobby of the local scout office, with my parents and scoutmaster nervously waiting for my name to be called. Attempting to calm myself by talking and laughing with everyone, to not show my nerves, my name was finally called. This was it; there was no turning back now.…

In need of a volunteer for the preparatory summer program? Well look no further, as I would be more than happy to oblige. As there is a vacant position within the program, and I have a burning passion for providing counseling and guidance to those in need of it, I would be grateful if you were to grant me an interview. Central's host of guidance counselors and higher education assistants have answered all of my post-high school related questions in an in-depth and knowledgeable manner. As a fickle and undecided graduating senior myself, I have also researched the many varying paths one could choose to travel after high school, including, but not limited to, college, trade school, military, and immediate workforce options.…

Everyday, thousands of high school students immerse themselves in their community and create satisfaction in helping others in need. Community service is a critical aspect of teen development. Without it, students do not realize how much it means to help others, and they do not get the full experience of working with different people. Volunteerism is required in many high schools around the United States, but not all of them. This issue is incredibly controversial because the debate is whether community service actually helps students in the long run.…
