From a young age, I was taught that with hard work and dedication you can reach any goal you set. The high expectations that are placed on me, by both myself and my family, were originally created in kindergarten. I went to kindergarten already knowing how to read. A few weeks into school, after first judging my ability for herself, my teacher decided to send me to a first-grade classroom for our reading time. Being in a classroom with kids who were all a year older than me gave me a yearning for all the knowledge they had, but I hadn't learned yet. This curiosity for knowledge in all aspects of life has pushed me to take AP classes in all subjects, and even explore areas of my interest further after school. Also, being in an older class gave myself, my family, and my teachers high expectations of what I am capable of. In elementary school, these …show more content…
They first signed me up for dance when I was three because they said I loved to stomp around the house, so tap seemed like the perfect outlet. And while it started out as a joke to my parents, dance has turned into the one thing I can consistently look forward to having on a daily basis. Having a little brother always looking up to me around the house forced me into a leadership position within my family. I credit it with giving me the confidence to pursue a leadership position on campus and in clubs as well. Not only am I in the top 1% of my class, but I was also able to start a club for the prevention of sex trafficking, and I hold a position on the leadership board for most of the clubs I am in. At the end of my junior year, I actually went back to visit my kindergarten teacher to thank her for starting my education off right. Turns out, she had completely forgotten about sending me to another teacher, which I couldn't believe since that one decision entirely shaped by personality, both in and out of

I was born in a working-class family, in a refugee camp in the distant Himalayan country. Expectations were really high. Ten seconds after shouting at the top of her lungs for me to get up, my mother begins her day as she always does, providing my father, younger siblings and I with a meal. Which usually consists of the crispy black goya beans and medium sized white eggs all wrapped in a soft warm corn tortilla, I was thirteen when my mom was seven months pregnant, nearly fainted from exhaustion from cleaning houses, but it was not an option, my father's income was just not sufficient enough to support three children and an incoming one. “Strength and growth only come only through continuous effort and struggle” - Napoleon Hill. As a Sophomore I took 1 challenging class, which was an honors class, because I was afraid of struggling and fear of failing. I was almost mentally accepting that I would never have the capability or succeed in Honors classes and AP classes. I began to find out the term “Honors” was just a word the education placed to intimidate individuals to not challenge themselves. To this day this has been my biggest regret; not challenging myself with tough classes.…

People are shaped by their surroundings. These influences come in the form of anything from elementary school teachers to religious awakenings, from mission trips to news articles. For me, these influences come in the form of dance, God, and opportunity. Unexpectedly, dance has made a major impact on who I am. Though I started at age three, I've been dancing at a Vaganova-style ballet academy for seven years.…

Education has always been a part of my life. Long before my first day of kindergarten, my family’s love of learning has heavily influenced me. My maternal grandfather told me stories of people in places long ago with the same excitement and joy when I was five as he did when I was fifteen. I savor every moment I spend in my Uncle’s living room, their cozy furniture and reading lamps a mere practicality, while the books lining every shelf stole the spotlight. At nearly every stage in my elementary schooling, my mom inspired me to persevere and fought alongside me.…

In high school, I took advantage of AP and honors classes to prepare myself for college because I knew then that college was the key for a better future. I know that I do not want to work a minimum wage job for the rest of my life as my father does, which is precisely why my parents have always encouraged me to do well in my studies. Although school was difficult in terms of time management, learning and applying what I know, and studying, it was all worth the stress and sacrifices because I’ve earned college credit, in turn saving me money. Through challenging myself in these classes, I’ve learned important lessons such as that learning from my mistakes and that success comes from failure.…

My life began to spiral downward before fifth grade began. I found myself an endless loop over summer vacation of waking up, experiencing the day as a blur, sleep, then repeat. This drove me to discover a new way to spend my day. On the television I noticed a recurring advertisement for a game called ‘World of Warcraft’. At first I instilled the mindset that I could spend my time pragmatically but eventually I succumbed to boredom.…

Everyone wanted Mrs. Graham or Mrs. Friend because they were considered the “nicer” teachers. I didn’t really care who I had as long as they didn’t yell very much because it always scared me when they did that. I was the kid who always got upset when I saw that the teachers were yelling or mad at someone. My mom had told me that she didn’t request any certain teacher for me to have so it was going to be a surprise the next year when I found out.…

With the high demand for students to obtain a college degree, the majority of society assumes high school seniors should make college the next step in their lives. However, going to college and actually completing the journey is much easier said than done. Many factors such as the price of tuition, the increased competition for scholarships and admission, and the level of support and encouragement one has affect those "college times" in a person 's life. An aspect of this journey that really stands out to me is the use of programs that aid first-generation college students. From the financial aid to the programs ' mentoring benefits, these programs can make a huge difference in the lives of so many people hoping to obtain the education they…
