College Admissions Essay: Art Therapy

Improved Essays
I grew up with a paintbrush in one hand and a pencil in the other, and I own more art supplies than A.C.Moore. In high school, I have chosen studio art as my elective every year, and I have had four projects selected for Spring-Ford’s annual art show. In one of my favorite pieces, I incorporated music by drawing hands playing a piano in white charcoal on black paper. Then after attending several mission trips throughout high school, I discovered another passion of mine. I realized I like helping others. Five mission trips truly opened my eyes to the needs of others. I had such a warm feeling inside when a little old widower hugged me after we repainted her house. I searched for ways I could combine these two passions and discovered art therapy.

Two summers ago, I experienced an epiphany in the Contarelli Chapel in the Church of San Luigi dei Francesi in Rome. While I am certainly not the first to have had a revelatory experience there, mine was not of the religious kind. Rather, mine was the illuminating realization that my path leads where my dual and symbiotic passions for history and art have been inexorably guiding me my entire young life. I have long been fascinated by the past and drawn to museums and other repositories of the past. The first time I breathed the chill conditioned air of the American Museum of Natural History, my father had to lift me on his shoulders to give me an unobstructed view of the fossil remains of a triceratops.…

It is hard to identify who developed art therapy because human history has intertwined with art as far back as 30,000 BCE (Perdew, 2015, p. 14) and it is widely accepted that art evokes emotion whether it is from the observer or from the artist who uses it to portray their own emotions and perspective of the world through their art. However, the term Art Therapy can be attributed to Adrian Hill in 1942, an artist who used art with other patients when recovering from tuberculosis in a British sanatorium (Hogan, 2001, p. 29). He continued to practice Art Therapy after seeing successes with other patients and after being discharged from the hospital (Hogan, 2001, p. 29). Netherence, a psychiatric hospital in Britian, employed Adrian Hill as the first official art therapist 1946 (Bitonte, 2014, p. 1) Art as a form of therapy existed…

I grew up, and always have been, odd. I am not saying that I was raised by wolves, or my parents are spies, and I traveled the globe hunting down foreign enemies. I wish. Art was a therapy, a tool for which to express and relate. I was able to find passion in my life, a glimpse into the possibilities of maintaining a creative mind, and the success I could have in pursuing it. It gave me a community of fellow artists who never failed to inspire and encourage me, and from every art show, display, award, and recognition, confidence follows me on this route to what lies ahead. It was with the confidence I gained here that I was able to take the next step in applying to college, with the hopes of continuing my life in the creative industry, by becoming a casting director for television. However, the problem with such a career is that it thrives on networking and connections, that to a young person are only available in the form of unpaid internships.…
