A messy bedroom, Arctic Monkeys as background music, and an adolescent begrudgingly writing an essay for their twelfth grade English class is the current scene. This is the perspective of a senior; an absolutely glamorous time in life. It's an alarming thought that my high school career has brought me to this point as I search my mind for the correct words to advise you and my fingers tap away at my small keyboard. I'm supposed to give advice and guidance to the future graduates of our beloved Quincy High School, but there's little I can give that can be completely relatable to all. For example, I was raised by a single father, am a part-time cashier, and can barely figure out how the Pythagorean theorem will actually affect my adult life.…

In high school I was an A average student who was always involved in extracurricular activities. From sports to honor societies, I was an active member of most. With that being said, I believe I was a perfect candidate for the University of Maryland. The only setback that seemed apparent was my SAT score, which fell a little short of the UMD average. I was not bothered or worried about being accepted into UMD until admissions decisions came out: I didn’t get in.…

I am a first-generation college student and I come from a low-income family. Obtaining a higher education has always been a challenge for me. I grew up in a small town in the middle of nowhere in Northeast California. My family owns a donut shop and business has been slow so my parents are struggling a bit as they are sending me to college. Nonetheless, I was able to help my parents pay for some things, such as rent and other expenses because over the summer of 2014, I was offered an engineering internship.…

How will colleges look at me compared to others that are applying? I hope that they will be interested in who I am and what I can bring to their campus community, and not as much on how I scored on the ACT's tests. I hope they will look at my high school achievements, all the activities both in and out of school that I have done, my volunteer work, my time on the playing field and how I have progressed academically over four years. I believe that when you look at me as a freshman three years ago and now as a senior, you will see that I have continued to push myself in my studies. Each year I have challenged myself academically by taking honors and AP classes, becoming more involved with important school clubs, and pushing myself on the playing field.…

Expressing myself and what goes on in my head has always been a struggle for me. I grew up without a voice; not knowing what to say or how to say it. So I drew. I drew horses, I drew smiling suns with sunglasses, I drew bows in girls’ hair, I drew lions eating zebras while monkeys laughed at them, I drew whatever came to my mind. When I drew, I wanted to speak about my drawings, I would turn to my friends or my teachers and explain to them what was happening in my creation.…

Why would I not want to live (and go to school) in a town where I can eat ribs at The Joint? This is the first place my aunt brought me, after picking me up at the airport. I was a freshman in high school and was enthusiastic to visit New Orleans because Lil Wayne, my favorite rapper, grew up there. We stayed in the Lower Garden District, it turns out, a very different place from Weezy’s Hollygrove. During the day, while my aunt was at work, I navigated the maze-like streets of the French Quarter, spellbound by the skinny, brightly colored houses decorated with beads, the warm air in my face gave me a sense of well being.…

Duquesne was actually the last place I ever thought I would end up for college. I never wanted to stay close to home and the city did not seem like the right fit for me. However, once I discovered all the opportunities it had to offer I realized it did not matter that the city location wasn’t quite what I wanted and that home was only forty minutes away. It could give me what I really wanted and enjoyed – a high level, in-depth education.…

In my entire life, I have made so many decisions when facing any fork in the road. The most significant defining moment I ever had is to decide whether I should go to study in the United States. When I was fifteen years old, I started to think of continuing my academics in another country. I was very enthusiastic and active in academics until the last year of my middle school. In China middle school, students had to do a lot of hard work to prepare for the Senior High School Entrance Examination, the test that determines the quality of the high school that one could attend.…
