In 2008, the recession hit hard in St. George, Utah, which caused my father to be laid-off and become unemployed for two years. This was a stressful time in our lives, but it also brought my dad and I closer together since he was “Mr. Mom” at the time; however, my father knew it was time for a drastic change. With the urging of a friend, my dad packed up his tools and drove to Williston, North Dakota with no job and no place to live. He took a leap of faith to save our family, and the day he arrived, he found a job and a place to live. Having him leave me was heartbreaking. He went from being there daily to quarterly. He is my hero though because he made the biggest sacrifice of his life. He moved fourteen hours away to work twelve hours a day and seven days a week to support us. However, that was not the only sacrifice made during this time. While everyone around us said it could not be done, that it would not work, and we should not move. My mom and I decide that after three years of only seeing my dad quarterly that we would move closer to him. We ended up moving to Billings, Montana in order to see him monthly. As a family unit we knew we wanted to live closer to North Dakota, but my dad did not want me growing up in the oil field. We first looked in Bozeman, Montana, but while it provided us with a home for a time, the location did not work. Next, we explored Billings, Montana, but with no family or connections in the town, we ended up having to rent hotel rooms for the summer. While a hotel is fun and new for vacations, after a time it no longer brings comfort. In the end, we finally found a place to rent; my mom went back to college; and we were able to enjoy my dad’s company each
