College Admissions Essay: Am I Unique In My Life

Improved Essays
Everyone is unique in his or her own way, and for me uniqueness involves everyone around me. As I speak you will begin to understand where my uniqueness comes from. I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself by giving you some insight into my history, and what I feel makes me unique along with some reasons I chose my major, and what I hope to do upon graduation.
As a child, I never really found my place or uniqueness. My parents split when I was only two. My dad remarried, and I did not see him much because I never felt welcome in his new family. My mom, Pat, remarried several times, but she got it right the last time. “Red” Gibson was not my biological dad; however, he is who I call dad. I have a younger brother and two step-sisters.

The sad part about it all is that I really can’t speak on my father’s side of the family that much because he hasn’t been in my life for over 15 years. I have no relationship with him whatsoever because I gave him a number a chances to be in my life and he never took advantage of that opportunity. Although, I would have liked for him to see me grow up and became the young man I am today he has shown me on numerous occasions that he didn’t see potential in me or my other seven siblings he’d abandoned, some of them I still have yet to meet. I don’t think anyone will ever feel my pain of not having a father figure in their life as much as I had to. No male role model, no guidance just a single mother doing the best she can for her children with no handouts.…

While there are many attributes that make me unique, my passion is the most prominent. I have passion for helping people, especially kids. This lead me to volunteer at my church with kids, tutor kids, and begin the application process with Big Brothers Big Sisters, an organization with which I will meet once a week with a kid at an elementary school near my college to mentor him, because he has been deemed in need of a mentor because of some sort of hardship in his life. My passion for music lead me to play trombone and marching baritone in band, both concert and marching, at the high school level. During my senior year, my marching band even won Grand Nationals in Indianapolis, Indiana.…
