College Admissions Essay: A Short Story

“What?” “You’re lying!” “Wait a week and rethink this.” Those are the true words of motivation bestowed upon me when my family and friends discovered I was enlisting in the United States Navy.

If I had a penny every time an adult exclaimed, “high school goes by in the blink of an eye,” I wouldn’t have to write this essay. I hadn't taken to heart these words of wisdom until last summer. I’d walked into school each day as a freshmen, not comprehending I’m the opposite. My senior year arrived. Twelve years of my life took flight. In just one blink.

Senior year I began my quest for colleges that caught my eye. Like most quests, the treasure chest I uncovered didn’t overflow with gold or diamonds - but with self discovery. Resembling clockwork, the Army recruiter came to educate our NJROTC class. And for once, reason unknown, he seized my full attention. He unlocked my mind with the key of curiosity which enabled the Armed Forces to govern my body. Little did I know, the man was revealing my future.

That's one adjective to portray my parents reaction. Their faces were concealed with skepticism. Their baby girl, who always dreamed of college, now announced her wish to enlist in the Navy. After a moment of silence and a glance of disbelief, this lone sentence left my father’s mouth, “keep your options open, Katie, because you’ll most likely change your mind in a week.” I was left speechless. Was taking the road less traveled the path for me? Identical reactions and remarks from various other peers reinforced my parents concern. What was I foreseeing? I’m the cliche small town girl in that cliche small town movie. The girl whos sheltered and has no knowledge of what she has gotten herself into. Could I rely on my hundred average in NJROTC to survive two months of basic

I tried to tackle the college application process as honestly as I could. I knew I was not the smartest or the most talented applicant in a sea filled with thousands of application, but I knew I was unique. There was and still is only 1 me, Brian Bristol, on the entire planet. I used this knowledge to my advantage and did my best to convey my story to each college I applied to. Being transparent throughout the application process is underappreciated among high school students, and the fact that I was able to express myself was looked upon favorably by many colleges.…

As I try to reconstruct the events of Induction Day at the United States Naval Academy, I can only piece together small clearings in the fog. It was a whirlwind of activity and heat and fog. My brother was a second-class midshipman at the time which gave me a false sense of confidence for what was to come. My day began at 0530 on the morning of July 1, 2014. I put on my “Don’t give up the ship” t-shirt (which turned out to be a mistake as a slew of jokes were made on my behalf during the issuing of all the gear), said my good-byes and proceeded to stand in the first of many long lines filled with other young men and women sporting terrible haircuts.…

Initially, I was very narrow-minded about career choices and that joining the military after High School was the best option for me. I failed to obtain notice of the opportunities that were offered to me until later in my senior year. During senior year, I became interested in the possibility of attending college, but also to be apart of our great Armed Forces. I asked myself, “How was this possible?”…

My college search has brought me to many universities: visiting campuses, and talking to students, alumni, and faculty. While I could receive an excellent education from any of these schools, Notre Dame offers something "more. " I first noticed this something "more" through a contact I made with Kyle Cowdrick, ND class of 2015, who I have been emailing back and forth with over the last year about admissions, Notre Dame, and the college experience. I once asked him why he bothered to use his precious time to mentor me, someone he barely knew before, his answer: "It's the Irish way".…

College Admission Frenzie Parents, students, and alumni, all have one situation in common: college was conducted into their minds early in life. Starting in the early 2000’s, college degrees seemed to become more necessary to acquire jobs in America. Because of this, parents seemed to influence their children to start learning more about college at a younger age. A pro to this idea, is that the student gains more knowledge about the necessity, and importance, of a college degree.…

Before the summer of my sophomore year, I had not thought about my post high school plans beyond knowing I would like to attend college. However, I attended a STEM camp at Valparaiso University in Indiana where I met former astronaut and Naval Academy graduate, Ken Ham. He inspired me to not only begin my own flight training, but to start investigating the Naval Academy. The more I learned about the Naval Academy and the different opportunities that serving as an officer in the military presented, the more determined I became to attend. I understand that the decision to attend a service academy is not to be taken lightly.…

Not long ago, I was apart of Most Holy Trinity Leadership, a youth group at my church.…

In today’s society we as individuals strive to achieve a better tomorrow, how we reach those goals reflect on the type of individual we are in society. Throughout humanity there has always been two broad forms of individuals, those who succeed and those who fail. What distinguish these forms is determination, “The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand.” (Bibi quote this). In my strive to become successful I’ve started my journey by enrolling into an internship program that is linked to my major, by doing so this allows me to receive hands on training in my field that would allow me to become proficient .…

Rushing through the halls, stepping from colored tile to tile, arms occupied with clothes and shoes for my rehearsal, I knew exactly where I was going. Despite my fixation on getting to the auditorium, a secluded room caught my attention; a room that appeared unrecognizable to my peers. One unlike the others, with blasting music used as white noise and a round robin system being practiced inside. Vision boards, memorabilia, and quotes that read inside jokes surrounded the walls. Completely ignorant to what lied ahead my peers swam past, but my gut had signaled me, warning that this was something new and different.…
