“What?” “You’re lying!” “Wait a week and rethink this.” Those are the true words of motivation bestowed upon me when my family and friends discovered I was enlisting in the United States Navy.
If I had a penny every time an adult exclaimed, “high school goes by in the blink of an eye,” I wouldn’t have to write this essay. I hadn't taken to heart these words of wisdom until last summer. I’d walked into school each day as a freshmen, not comprehending I’m the opposite. My senior year arrived. Twelve years of my life took flight. In just one blink.
Senior year I began my quest for colleges that caught my eye. Like most quests, the treasure chest I uncovered didn’t overflow with gold or diamonds - but with self discovery. Resembling clockwork, the Army recruiter came to educate our NJROTC class. And for once, reason unknown, he seized my full attention. He unlocked my mind with the key of curiosity which enabled the Armed Forces to govern my body. Little did I know, the man was revealing my future. …show more content…
That's one adjective to portray my parents reaction. Their faces were concealed with skepticism. Their baby girl, who always dreamed of college, now announced her wish to enlist in the Navy. After a moment of silence and a glance of disbelief, this lone sentence left my father’s mouth, “keep your options open, Katie, because you’ll most likely change your mind in a week.” I was left speechless. Was taking the road less traveled the path for me? Identical reactions and remarks from various other peers reinforced my parents concern. What was I foreseeing? I’m the cliche small town girl in that cliche small town movie. The girl whos sheltered and has no knowledge of what she has gotten herself into. Could I rely on my hundred average in NJROTC to survive two months of basic
