This room is the birthplace of freedom in my mind. I am able to free my mind and relieve all the stress I have from school with essays, projects, and the pile of homework. Over the last 8 years, I have learned to appreciate this room the most. This is my safe place, my relaxing and calming room. It’s like walking through a bed of flowers with the sun shining bright and feeling like time had stopped for a brief moment. I have become to cherish this room more than I cherish some people. This is my safe place, where I feel free and I can express my feelings of hurt and anger as well as joy and happiness. I don’t want this dance year to be over because I love coming here every week. I have appreciated dance for so long. After my freshman year of dance, I learned that change can be a good thing. So as I sit here and wait, all I can think about is how much this one room has changed me more than I ever thought it would in passed years. I can’t believe how much I have changed since I started dance in fifth grade. I have improved in dancing as well as being able to express myself and my feeling through movement. One thing that sticks out to me the most is that as I sit here, this room that has changed with me. The floor has been redone and the mirrors have moved from one wall to the opposite wall making the room look bigger. I have spend my worst and best moments of my life here. I have come to love a sport that isn’t all about how strong you are, how fast you can run, or competing against others. Dance is about learning to be able to express yourself. Loud beats, shouts and footsteps fill my ears, and an awful stench of sweat makes it’s way into my nose, but this dance studio is a special place nonetheless. Every pirouette and grande jeté felt so liberating and suddenly, I was dancing the final steps in the choreography. After my solo was complete, I curtsied, concluding my performance. Growing up in an artistic household, there had never been a time that dance was not present in my life. At an early age, I was exposed to the arts and show business and nothing intrigued me more. I would spend countless hours backstage of my mother’s performances, frolicking in her makeup and playing make-believe. I fell in love with everything the theater had to offer and eventually it became my second home. As I grew older, and my motor skills emerged, nothing and no one could restrain me from dancing to the imaginary rhythms that flowed through my body.…

Being callow was part of the predicament, and my early teenage mindset kept me in captivity. Unlike my mother, I’ve been oblivious to the fact that as a citizen, I’m capable of achieving anything. During my last two years of high school, I realized that she was utterly right.…
