I had hit the exhaustion phase of exercise without even noticing. Quite quickly I began accumulating a variety of injuries that ultimately culminated in an inability to participate in even the most moderate of exercise. This left me devastated, as a major part of my life, something I used to

An unusually fragile underclassman: devoid of faith and fearful of a new environment brimming with the cold embrace of the unknown. “What do you like about yourself?” Sitting in the audience, listening to an assembly during my freshman orientation of high school, this existential question hit me like a tidal wave—initially destructive yet ultimately metamorphic. Those around me blessed with a wealth of confidence from a young age beamed with vanity: athletes, scholars, musicians and those exceptionally precocious few with the ability to thrive in multiple environments.…

From reading the book Switch: How to Change Things when Change is Hard, I decided to write myself a destination postcard for something I have long missed since moving to Reno to attend college; riding a motorcycle to train and compete in the sport of motocross. I was forced to sell my last motorcycle in 2009, seen in the postcard above, when I moved to Reno for college. Now that I am nearly finished, I have decided to focus on obtaining a new bike (a major elephant motivating reward) and getting back to a proper level of health, strength, and fitness to mitigate any chances for further jeopardizing my risk for re-injury. To accomplish this change process, I have worked to script my critical moves, develop action triggers, tweak my environment,…

Growing up, I became adept at running away from people, problems and my fears. When I was younger, I was the victim of bullying being a shy, awkward and overweight child. At the time, I had no idea that I would be subjecting myself to years of failure, all because I chose to let fear paralyze me. I was in my junior year of high school when I first discovered the weight room.…

Currently, most of society is not educated about Athletic Training. This is likely accurate because Athletic Training is comparatively new in the health care system and it is a distinct form of care. Only athletes or those who are involved in an athletic profession have access to Athletic Trainers. I believe that education is crucial to making Athletic Training even more successful than it already is. Most members of society presumably do not know that Athletic Trainers are health care professionals.…

The bed mercilessly taunts my exhausted limbs to return but my determined heart persuades me to brave the trial by water once more. As I dive over the ice cold pool, dread and regret fill every moment until my body finally makes contact. For two, sometimes three, hours the situation will only worsen as I repeatedly raise my arms above my head and pull back as hard as possible. Weeks of this pass by, all for the sake of being able to travel through 100 meters of water a few milliseconds faster. Swimming has been my primary sport since the age of eight.…
